When you write a DIY and home decor blog, often times family/friends/acquaintances will ask you to help them out when it comes to decorating their own homes. It’s very flattering that people want our advice, but Bridget & I are usually too busy working on our own homes to really dive into helping out everyone who asks. But we make an exception for family members…because heck, they’re family. And we definitely say “yes!” when that family member gives you (almost) complete creative control. And did I mention that this said family member doesn’t have a strict, tight, penny-pinching budget?
This dream client? My older brother Ryan.
You may remember Ryan back from this post when we surprised him with a sweet record wall. Ryan recently bought a beautiful 2 bedroom condo here in Chicago and he wants to make it a great place to call home. Bridget & I went and checked out the space together a few weeks back, and we left with a lot of exciting ideas.
Our first order of business is to tackle his entryway. It’s the first area guests see, and it opens up into the family room. So we figured it’s a top priority when it comes to decorating. Right now Ryan has an Ikea console table that is in pretty good shape, but it’s lacking in the storage department. And as you can see…he has a shoe collection growing near his front door. There is also a lot of potential on the wall above the console table. We’re thinking it’s prime real estate for vertical storage, that doubles as a place to show off a little bit of Ry’s awesome personality.
So here’s what we came up with…
Step 1: We convinced Ryan to give his entire condo a fresh coat of paint. In the main room (which includes the entryway), we’re going with Sherwin Williams “Olympus White.” It’s a gorgeous light gray, with a slight blue undertone. You can see the swatch in the mood board above near the hook. We’re excited to see how the new color looks with the fresh white trim.
Step 2: We knew we wanted a nice sideboard or cabinet to go right in the entryway. It needed to have cabinets or drawers for secret storage (hide all of those shoes!), and we also wanted it to have a sleek, modern, sophisticated vibe. The sideboard above from CB2 fit the bill perfectly. We’re obsessed with the marble top and the pattern on the wood. The only problem is that this particular piece won’t come in until June! So if we don’t find anything comparable, Ryan’s going to have to wait a bit. Above the sideboard, we want to install 2 to 3 long shelves. These will offer storage, but more importantly they’ll be a great place to style with accessories and some of Ry’s personal items.
Step 3: Once the room is painted, and the big furniture piece and shelves are in place…it will be time to accessorize this entryway. As we’ve been shopping, we’ve found Ryan a few great accessories on the cheap. We’re drawn to anything that is modern or music-inspired. We’ll definitely incorporate the music theme into the space with some art prints, frames, and more records. A lamp and some brass hooks for keys will also be essential when it comes to completing the space. So what do you guys think about our plan? Do you love that sideboard as much as we do? Let us know if you find anything that compares so we don’t have to wait until June to finish up this project!
