Design Dilemma: My Husband’s Trophy

Since starting the blog, we’ve heard from many of you ladies asking how we compromise with our hubbies when it comes to decorating our homes.  The truth is they kinda give us free-reign in our spaces. We try to be respectful of their likes & dislikes (not too much hot pink & glitter going on in our households), and for the most part it really works.

But I have found myself in a design dilemma with Finn. The man is a sports nut (as evidenced by his involvement in multiple fantasy sports leagues), and he just doesn’t ever seem to tire of watching football games. Apparently he is pretty good at the whole fantasy thing, because this year he won his league. #uhoh4-finn-trophy-championAnd with that championship title came 1 large….very large…trophy. 1-ofl-trophyNow of course I’m very proud of him and his accomplishments, but that doesn’t mean I’m eager to display this monstrous trophy in our home. 2-finn-trophy-football-winnerWhen it initially arrived earlier this year, I gave him a big pat on the back, said congrats, and secretly prayed he would put the trophy in a closet.  Instead of concealing it behind closed doors, he’s spent the last 4 weeks moving it from place to place throughout our home. 5-trophy-bedroom-dresserFor awhile it hung out in our bedroom.4-trophy-bedroom-nightstandAnd it even spent some time on our nightstand. Because every girl loves waking up to a ginormous trophy in the morning….5-trophy-hallway-decorIt’s been in the hallway.

And it’s also spent a few days chilling on our new bar cart. 6-ofl-fantasy-league-trophy

I’ve tried to gently suggest that he brings it to work to show off to all of his colleagues! But instead of saying, “you’re right, Casey! You always have such brilliant ideas. And did I mention that you’re looking extra beautiful today?” I got a mini lecture about allowing him to display some of his favorite items around our home, since it’s OUR home after all. 3-football-trophy-finnOkay..he does have a point. I was being a bit selfish not wanting to display his big award in our space. But how can I make this big ol’ trophy fit in with our home’s style?

1-ofl-football-trophyIt’s not going to be easy, but I’m willing to make it work… for now at least. The truth is as much as I’m not in love with the fact that I have to display this less than Pinterest-worthy piece of home decor throughout our home, this new piece of “hardware” is a part of Finn’s story and therefore will become a part of our home’s story. We are all about creating a home that tells a story here on the DIY Playbook, and I guess it’s time for me to compromise with my better half and practice what we preach… even if it’s not exactly the accessory I was imagining in our new home sweet home.  So it looks like I have no choice but to suck it up and display his new trophy with a smile.

2-the-commish-fantasty-football-trophyBut the best news about this new accessory for our home? It’s only around for 1 year, until the next league champion gets the honor of displaying it in their house for all to see.

3-finn-fantasy-football-trophySorry Finn…I may be rooting against you next year. Let the countdown to the 2016 NFL season begin! casey_sig

HA!!! This is too funny! Love it!

    • Thanks Summer! Any good design tips from an expert?

Haha this is so great!! My husband always says I’m the design guru but then proceeds to tell me what he wants to put in the house followed up with but you’re the design person lol what would we do without them?

What if he wins the 2016 fantasy league season too??? You may have to find a more permanent spot for this trophy.

    • Tell me about it. The thought has crossed my mind!! I may need to be more of a distraction on Sundays in the fall….

Is it weird that I don’t think it looks bad as the bookend on your dresser?? I kind of like it 🙂

    • hahah! Oh boy. Let’s hope he isn’t reading this.

  • So funny that he moves it around the house! Guys. Stick some flowers or fruit in it. I”m sure he’ll love that 😉

I feel for you Casey! My husband is also a sports nut…I mean, fanatic 🙂 We now host annual draft parties for his leagues lol. I recently had the opportunity to take a picture with an athlete and my husband was insistent that the paper frame stand be strategically placed so that it was the first thing guests could see when they came over.

    • That is hilarious Cindy!! I’m lol’ing over here….

  • Oh my goodness! That is hilarious….3 feet high?! You are a loving & patient wife Lindsay.

So it’s a trophy for… guessing what fake sports teams do?! I second filling it with lemons, or apples, make it functional! LOL

  • Oh no! I think the hallway is my favorite of the above options but that is too funny. My hubs is more of a “nerd” so he keeps trying to sneak Star Wars stuff into our decor. He puts it out in the living room or our bedroom when he first gets it and waits for me to notice and move it into the office part of our guest room/office combo. 😉 I’ve told him that’s his little nerd space!

  • This is too funny! Luckily my husband didn’t win this year…otherwise I’d have to figure out where to put (errr – hide) a giant wrestling-like belt they use as their trophy. He did win last year…and I bargained with him that he had to buy me something with the winnings because i put up with the fantasy stuff all season. 🙂

  • Just be happy it’s only a trophy! My hubs has a hideous overstuffed blue (fake) leather love seat and ottoman that he just can’t part ways with. I’d say it is responsible for about 90% of our arguments. Ha! I can’t wait to see what you come up with!
