A New Mattress…in a Box!

I’ve read home & DIY blogs for years now….long before I ever became a blogger myself. And I’ve always loved reading other blogs because I’m constantly introduced to new products & items for my home that I wouldn’t have known about otherwise.

Specifically because the one we have is so incredibly old (honestly, I’m embarrassed to admit that I don’t even know how old it is…), and I was putting this new gorgeous bedding on a gross, old mattress. Having read about the new “mattress in a box” trend on a few of my favorite blogs, I decided to do a bit of research on the subject.

After looking into a few companies, I was sold! No heading to a mattress store to have an awkward chat with a mattress salesman. Instead, I would order my mattress online and have it shipped (in a box!) to my front door and I wouldn’t have to take a day off work waiting for a mattress delivery man!

I decided on the company GelFoamBed specifically because their prices were great, all of their products are made in America, and they have a 100 night risk free trial.

They have a wide variety of mattresses to choose from that vary in their “plushness.” I decided to go with one of their bestsellers…the 12″ Miranda Medium Plush Gel Memory Mattress. Shortly after ordering, it showed up at our doorstep in a big ol’ box. I could barely believe that my new mattress was inside this thing!

Okay, so we had a new mattress…but what about our old mattress?

See I told you it was old! We had to get rid of this bad boy, and since it had seen better days we weren’t able to donate it to a local charity (they often won’t take mattresses with any rips and ours had a couple in it). After more research, I came upon the company Mattress Disposal Plus who will take your old mattress away for a fee and recycle it! In full disclosure, their customer service wasn’t the best…but they did eventually (after a few too many calls…) take our mattress away for $79. It was a small price to pay, considering Finn & I were sooooo eager to get this thing out of our sight for good.

Okay, so our old one was gone…now time to open up the new one! mattress-rolled-up-guest-roomHere it is all rolled up. Following the instructions, I pulled it out of the box and put it on the bed frame. mattress-gifAfter carefully tearing away the plastic, it opened up and fully expanded.new-mattress-guest-room I could hardly believe how big it got in a matter of minutes! miranda-mattress I am definitely a mattress newbie, having never actually purchased one as an adult, and only using hand-me-downs from family members over the years. But wow…this is how a bed is supposed to feel! It is a sink-in-take-a-nap kinda comfortable!headboard-mattressWe’ve always used a mattress pad on our mattresses, but there is absolutely no need for one on this. It’s so plush, and after reading more about it I learned that the memory foam layer also creates a cooler sleep surface. Who knew mattresses had so many awesome features these days?!

After a few jumps on the new bed, I finally put the bedding on top and got our guest room back together. guest-room-new-mattress-beddingguest-room-new-mattress-wallWhen Finn got home from work that day, he immediately tried out the new mattress and declared that we must move it to our master bedroom. Which makes sense….why wouldn’t we put the new mattress in there where we could enjoy it every.single.night?! Duh.

master-bedroom-pillowsSo our new mattress found its final resting spot in our master bedroom. Sorry to our future guests. But hey, at least they don’t have to sleep on the ancient-stiff-as-a-board mattress we disposed of!

mattress-gif-1If you’re currently shopping around for a new mattress, you should definitely check out the GelFoamBed site. And if you do find one that you love, be sure to use the promo code “diyplaybook” for $50 off!

So thanks to some of my favorite bloggers, I now know that the “mattress in a box” trend is more than just a trend…it is here to stay. And I highly recommend you give it a try!

  • Those prices are intriguing. $750 for a king-size mattress is a pretty good price. I think we’ll be purchasing a new bed next year sometime. Il ove our mattress… but not the last person who slept on it before me, if you know what I mean. lol

    • Yeah, a very good price! I was hesitant, but figured it was only for our guest room so it wouldn’t get slept on very often if it wasn’t the greatest. But man, I was pleasantly surprised! Hence the reason it’s now our master mattress 🙂

Definitely worth looking into when it’s mattress shopping time

This is so neat! I have been hearing about these as well, and it’s definitely making me more and more intrigued as I see all the great reviews!

    • I was the same way Emily! Kinda hesitant because of the whole box thing and the lower price point…but wow, it lives up to the hype!

  • Erin

wow that price is fantastic!! compared to some of the other bed in a box. my main issue is i get the most random night sweats….so i have to be careful with what materials is in the bed (memory foam is probably something that retains heat?)

    • Erin, me & my husband are the same way! It says this mattress has a “cooling technology” and the quilted top layer has a cooling effect. After sleeping on it for a few weeks it’s hard to tell, because it’s gotten a lot warmer outside and sometimes our room gets stuffy! But I haven’t gotten any night sweats recently! Definitely something to look into.

maybe do a follow up on the mattress after about 6 months? how it’s been, whether it’s comfortable through the hot months, cooler months, etc.

    • Great idea! I’ll add it to our calendar!

  • KLynne

This is probably a silly question, but did you just use your existing box-spring or did you need something special? I’ve never actually purchased a mattress, but I always figured they came together as a set!

    • Not a weird question at all! We did just use our existing box-spring. For the company we went with, you can buy a box spring with it if you don’t have one. We figured ours would work just fine!

  • I almost wish I needed a mattress so I could try this out! We used a hand me down mattress for our first ~5 years of marriage and I felt so grown up when we finally bought one ourselves! And it was so much better!

    • This is our first time getting a new mattress too! We’ve had hand me downs for the past 6 years..so it was time to upgrade!

hey Casey great post! Love the mattress!
