How to Curl Long Loose Waves

Caseys-Curled-Hair-After

Last fall I twisted Bridget’s arm and convinced her to step outside of our little DIY box and do a beauty post. Do you remember this post where B shared all of the deets about her super cute short hairdo?

BridgetThe girl gets comments ALL THE TIME about her bouncy short locks and I’m so happy she gave you guys a step-by-step on how she achieves that look with a straightener!

Well, I thought the hair posts were over and it was back to business around here…but I was wrong. During our reader survey, I received a few comments asking for a how-to on my long loose waves, and this time it was Bridget’s turn to convince me to pose for some awkward photos.

Wow, it’s a heck of a lot easier to be behind the camera! Let’s just say I’m happy to report that no large chunks of hair burned off in the making of this post. Although holding a hot curling iron on your super thin hair in order to “get the shot” was more difficult than either of us anticipated #sizzle

Stats

Time: 10 minutes
Supplies: 2 inch barrel curling iron, brush (I love the wet brush!), teaser, hairspray, butterfly clip
Best Curls: When my hair is washed and just blow dried, but not round brushed with the dryer <–if that makes any sense!
FYI: I have very fine, thin hair that is naturally straight.
Random Thought: As Bridget mentioned in her post…if you’re a trained hair professional, I’m sorry! You’re probably cringing as you read this and see my lack of hair knowledge and skill. This is just what I, a normal gal, does to achieve a certain look.

Step 1: I use a butterfly clip to section off the bottom layer of hair. I don’t have much hair, so I don’t need to do too many layers. I’d say I put about 2/3 of my hair up and leave the rest down to be curled. curling-ironUnlike Bridget (who uses a straightener to curl her hair), I’m all about a good ol’ curling iron. This one is super old and I’ve used it many times over the years…it gets the job done! When I’m getting ready for the day, I typically plug my curling iron in, do my makeup while it heats up, and then start curling. That way my iron is nice and hot and ready to go!

Step 2: I take a 3 inch section in the front and wrap it around the curling iron AWAY from my face. I like my front pieces to curl away from my face so my hair naturally kinda flows backwards. I also like to curl pretty big sections at a time so my hair isn’t too curly…and it’s more wavy. I start at closest to my hair root and wrap the rest of my hair around the iron. Then I hold it for about 3 seconds.

Once my front piece is curled, I curl the rest of my head INTO my face. That way the curls are going different ways. I’m not sure if this is a good technique, but it’s what looks best with my hair. #notapro

Step 3: Once the first layer is done, I spray it all over with hair spray and work on another layer of hair. For my second & third layers, I like to tease my hair at the roots prior to curling. This just give me some much-needed height in the back. I like to do it at this step (instead of when I’m done), so I don’t ruin the curls when they’re all nice.

Step 4: For the top layer, I’m a little more cautious with the teasing so it doesn’t get too frizzy. I spend the most time on the top layer of curls to make sure these babies look the best.

Once my last piece is done, I like to brush through my curls. This is definitely optional and sometimes I keep the curls as is and just spray, spray, spray! But, most of the time I like my curls to look a bit more loose and carefree, so I carefully brush them together a bit.

Finally, it’s all about that hairspray! Until I met Bridget I never used hairspray…never! I just didn’t like the crunchy feeling and would rather have my hair fall than use it. Today, that’s a different story. I spray the heck out of my hard work and hope that the humidity doesn’t mess with my curls.

Curling-Hair-CaseyOften times I think my hair looks best a few hours after I’ve done it. I’m not a huge fan of really tight curls and like the way it looks when it’s a little “softer.” Because my hair is so darn thin & flat, curling it like this definitely helps give it some much-needed volume!

So there you have it, my super exciting hair tutorial. It’s safe to say that this is probably one of the last hair posts you’ll see here on the blog, because that’s about all B & I have in our hair styling repertoire! Curls, straight hair, and messy buns are just about all we can tackle in the beauty department…casey_sig

Beauty: How-To Create Full Eyebrows

Casey Eyebrows

I have a confession to make.

I’ve hated my eyebrows for just about my entire life. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve thought they were too bushy and too dark.

It makes me sad to think that as a little girl I was so self-conscious about them, but I really was. I remember wanting to get rid of them when I was in maybe 4th or 5th grade. I was on a trip to the Grand Canyon and I begged my sister to tweeze them in the back of the car on the vacation. She did, it hurt, and I was splotchy red for the remainder of the trip. Ouch.

Fast forward 20 years…I’m finally embracing my full brows and I’m totally behind the new filled-in, well-defined eyebrow trend (let’s please keep it trendy for as long as possible!) In fact, I’ve gotten so many compliments on my eyebrows that I have really grown to love taking some extra time to fill them in and make them a little bit “bolder.”

So I thought it would be fun to show you guys the product I’m loving lately that really helps make my brows pop, without looking like they’re drawn on with a sharpie.

Brow-Wiz

It’s called Brow Wiz and I picked it up at Sephora. I just had them try out a few colors on me to find the perfect shade for my brows.

On one end is the actual pencil and the other end has a nice eyebrow brush. I typically take the pencil and lightly fill in any sparse areas to make them look darker. eyebroweyebrowThen I flip the stick over and comb my eyebrows through with the brush. You can also use the brush to lighten up some of the pencil color if it gets a bit too dark in certain areas.

Finally, to highlight my brows even more, I swipe on a light shimmery eyeshadow across my brow bone.

And that’s about all the extra time I add to my beauty routine to make my brows fuller and more defined. Ever since I started doing this, my makeup doesn’t feel complete unless I’ve spent a few minutes working on my brows. I think it just makes my face and eyes look that much better.

It feels great to finally celebrate this part of me that I’ve tried to alter my entire life. Even if fuller eyebrows go out of style soon, I’m still sticking with this look…because it’s a trait I should have embraced a long time ago.

I am so excited to see this! I have always been the same way, in the 6th grade I tweezed about half of each brow off. 15 years later I am still trying to recover from it. I can’t wait to try the brow wiz to help while still growing part of them back in!

My Bridal Beauty Routine

Casey-Solo

I don’t know who came up with this insane idea that a girl has to look “most beautiful” on her wedding day. But as a bride, I can tell you that the pressure is real…very very real. Perhaps it’s pressure I’m putting on myself, because not only will 200 pairs of eyeballs be directly on me on October 11th, but I’ll also have thousands of pictures documenting the way I look on that particular day. Just thinking about that makes me want to grab a pint of mint chocolate chip ice cream and curl up on the couch under a blanket. Yikes.imagesOkay, so maybe “most beautiful” is too much pressure. But I do want to FEEL good on the big day. Physically, mentally, emotionally…I want to be on my “A” game on all accounts. So today let’s chat about all of the things I’ve been up to over the last 9 months so I can look and feel my best on October 11th…Wide-Shot

 BODY:

I’m not a believer in “diets.” Instead, I’m in the camp where I would much rather workout, so I can eat and drink what I want.  I’ve always been fairly athletic, but with the wedding I knew I wanted to take things up a notch. For the past few months I’ve been doing a bridal boot camp 3 days a week. It’s pretty intense, and I’ve definitely noticed a difference in my arms and stomach. The number on the scale hasn’t really changed, but I feel much more toned. The boot camp is actually pretty awesome, because it’s full of other girls just like me. We love chatting about all things wedding (on water breaks of course!) and it’s been great to swap advice with other brides. I’ll probably continue with that even after the wedding, just because it’s a really great combo of cardio and strength. [Chicago ladies, this is the boot camp if you’re interested. Not sponsored, just really love it there!] I’ve also been walking to and from work just about everyday, which adds up to just less than 4 miles each day. To add a little intensity over these last couple weeks, I’ve also been doing Shred 415 classes. Whoa baby…now these are super intense. It’s four 15 minute intervals, with two on the treadmill and the other two with weights. I leave a sweaty, tired mess each time. All of these workout classes aren’t just helping me tone up, they’re also helping me escape from all of the chaos of these days right before the wedding. It’s nice to take an hour of “me time” and not think about table numbers, budgets, and wedding timelines.

AppleIn terms of food, I’ve just tried to cut out a lot of processed garbage. I eat fairly “clean”, but I’ve been known to have a bowl of cereal (or 3) at night and count that as a dinner. Finn and I have both been trying to cook more protein and veggies each week, so we’re less likely to order Thai food for dinner. I feel like every time I cave and eat something “naughty” the wedding gods are looking down at me with disappointment. I’ve also really upped my water intake, so I can have that nice “bridal glow.” On the weekends I opt for coconut water for extra electrolytes, especially since I’m usually having a cocktail or two at night. Vanilla-Bean-Bath-Soap

SKIN:

Continuing with the “bridal glow” topic, I’ve been doing my best to keep my skin looking good. For the most part, I stayed out of the sun this summer. If I was out, I always wore sunglasses and 55spf sunscreen on my face. I tried my best to avoid tan lines on my shoulders and back, but I may have some faint lines that need to be covered.

I’m a big bathtub girl (yeah I know some people think baths are gross…#sorryimnotsorry), so I’ve tried to limit my tub time so as not to dry out my skin. I’ve also added a face mask to my weekly routine, and I still use my clarisonic brush every other day. So far no zits to be found, and fingers crossed I don’t wake up next Saturday with a big one…Essie-Nail-PolishHAIR & NAILS:

You may have noticed that my hair is getting long. Like super long. I’ve been growing it out for the wedding, and I’ve been doing my best to keep it healthy. Less shampooing, and more deep conditioning for this blondie. That also means a lot less blow drying, and a lot more top knots. I actually just found these amazing spiral hair pins that I use to make my top knots (in picture above.) No need for a rubber band….2 of these should keep your hair secure. They’re awesome and I feel like my hair isn’t quite as damaged because of them.

I also worked with my hair stylist to schedule my highlights and haircuts prior to the wedding. I’m getting my hair colored today (woo hoo!) so it is fresh for next Saturday. My stylist and I also planned out my exact colors ahead of time, so I don’t have any scary blue hair moments like from Bride Wars…

Although if anyone can pull off blue hair, it’s Kate Hudson 😉

As for my nails, well my nails pretty much suck. I’m a hardcore nail biter. Yes, again it’s gross…but I can’t help it! I have stubby little fingers and stubby nails to go along with them. I’ve been growing out my nails so I don’t have to get fake ones put on for the wedding. My plan is to go next Friday and do a gel french manicure. Hopefully they’re long enough and I don’t munch on them before walking down the aisle.

Bridal-Beauty-RoutineMAKEUP:

Luckily, I’ll have my makeup professionally done for the big day. Although I did have to purchase my lip color prior to my makeup trial in August. I ended up going to Sephora, where I proceeded to try on about 10 different colors. Finally, I chose a lipstick and a lip pencil. I then went to pay…only to find out it was $82 total. Holy smokes. $52 just for the lipstick alone. I was flabbergasted, yet I felt so bad that I went ahead and made the purchase. Days later I went back, and I ended up exchanging my items for much more reasonably priced alternatives. Wow…I didn’t even know lipstick could be so expensive!

Book-Married-For-LifeMIND:

Finally, I’ve been doing my best to rest and enjoy these last few weeks before our wedding. Even though we have a lot going on, I’ve tried to hop in bed early each night to do a bit of reading before attempting to get in a good 8-9 hours of rest. It’s a great way to unwind, and it stills my mind before my head hits the pillow.

Finn’s Aunt gave us this book at our wedding shower, and I’ve loved reading a couple of pages each night at bedtime. The book offers advice from couples who have been married 50 years or longer.

Married-for-Life-BookThe words of wisdom and marriage tips are priceless, and it reminds me that October 11th is just the start of our life together. Casey-SoloOf course I want to be a beautiful bride next weekend, but I know that in the end it won’t really matter if my hair is frizzy, I have a zit on my nose, or my nails aren’t perfectly manicured. I’ll only be thinking about my handsome groom at the end of the aisle, and the beautiful life we have planned together. casey_sig

I’m quickly approaching my one year anniversary (November 3) and I remember those last few days of jitters! Just know that none of the “stuff” really matters – the whole day is about you and your man and the love you share!
My one suggestion is to try to take every single moment in and implant it in your memory as best you can. I only had a few sips of champagne throughout the day (honestly all I wanted was water! That dress was heavy) and saved my drinking til the after party, which I know helped me remember all those special moments even more.
Congratulations and wishing you the best of luck!!!

Congratulations! How exciting! I married my awesome husband in April, so the experience is quite fresh. I was doing very well with the whole bridal beauty routine myself until about three weeks before our big day. Disaster hit in the form of a sudden, unexpected bout of anemia that had me laid up for three days. Exercise was off-limits until my iron levels were greatly improved, which was a huge bummer (I bike to and from work everyday and I was doing some bridal workouts).

In the days leading up to our wedding, I remember being sad that I had lost all of my muscle tone and my dress, which had fit so perfectly before, was a bit snug. In the end, though, the day was beautiful and I don’t care that my arms weren’t quite as toned as they usually are in the photographs. It seems nobody but me and my mom noticed anyway.

My two cents: continue doing what you are doing and, no matter what bumps might happen between now and the big day next weekend, stay calm, smile and laugh, and enjoy it all. It goes by so fast but leaves happy memories! 🙂

Anemia does not come on suddenly. Unless you’ve had a lot of blood loss, being anemic is a gradual process over months. It’s not a quick, fix, either. You need to be on daily iron supplements for at least 6 weeks in order for your red blood cells to multiply. I hope your physician explained this to you….it’s impossible to have a “sudden bout” of anemia

What’s in Casey’s Bag?

Casey-s-Shoulder-Tote
I’ve got a little secret for you. I’m a die hard trashy magazine reader. Yep. I just can’t seem to get enough of Us Weekly, In TouchPeople…you name it…I love flipping through it! If you’re a magazine reader too, then maybe you’ve seen the feature in Us Weekly called “What’s in My Bag?” In the article, they show you a little sneak peek inside a celebrity’s handbag. It’s kinda fun and you get to see all of the cool products that the stars use!
Now we all know we’re no celebs (puh-lease), but we still thought it might be entertaining to show you all of the random crap stuff we carry in our bags. Just because it might give you a little insight into our personalities. Today is all about my bag, next Friday we’ll sneak a peek at B’s bag.
Michael Kors bag with fresh flowers
Here’s the bag I’ve been using all the time lately. It’s Michael Kors and it is fantastic. Usually I’m not the kind of girl who spends a lot on shoes and bags, but I spent a little extra on this one. It’s a great workbag because it is big enough to hold file folders, an umbrella, and any other work essentials. I also love that it zips! This is key when riding on the bus or subway…I just feel like my stuff is a bit safer in there.
Items in handbag
Holy moley…look at all the stuff I carry around all the time. This is definitely what you’ll typically find if you take a peek in my bag. Let’s just say I like to be prepared, and I just might have a sore shoulder at the end of a long day.
ventra card
There’s my Ventra card (bus & subway pass if you’re not a Chicagoan). I pretty much walk or ride public transportation everywhere, so having my card in a case that I can easily access makes my day a lot easier. I used to be that girl who would dig through her bag to find her card…now I know better.
As a DIY’er, I always have a tape measure on me. It’s great when I’m out shopping and need to know if a specific piece of furniture might fit in our space. In fact, I even keep dimensions of things I may need in my phone so I can always have the numbers right in front of me! Better to be prepared…you’d hate to miss out on a sweet piece of furniture just because you thought it was a couple inches too big for your space!
lipgloss
Every girls gotta have a little beauty in her bag, right? A comb and light pink lipgloss often come in handy. Then I always keep business cards on hand, because you just never know when you might find another DIY lover! I keep my personal cards, as well as the blog’s, tucked inside my little orange case.
sunglasses
I keep many of the little accessories in my bag tucked inside that small peach purse. I like it much better than having a bunch of little things floating around in a big bag. I usually keep my gum, bobby pins, lip gloss, and any other small beauty supplies in it. For me it means less digging around, and more time finding what I need!
Apple and tape measure
Next to my tape measure, I’ve got an apple. I’m a total apple girl..I probably eat 2 a day. Gala is my absolute favorite…but this green one did the job too.
cell phone case
Then finally, you won’t ever see me without my iPhone. I try to put it away and “unplug” whenever I can, but I must admit I’m pretty much addicted to it. I got my phone case from The Everygirl’s shop and I absolutely love it. It says “Scour the World for Beauty” and I receive oh so many compliments on it. It’s a little girly and a little glam…love it!
michael kors black tote
So there you have it, all of the randomness that I usually keep in my big ol’ bag. Sometimes you’ll even find some fresh flowers tucked right in there too. But only if I just made a quick run over to my fav grocery store Trader Joe’s.
Bridget taking pictures
Be sure to tune in next Friday to see what Bridget keeps in her bag. Until then you’ll just have to tide yourself over with this behind the scenes picture of B photographing her purse contents. Could you guess we shot these photos standing on a chair outside? Ha!
Casey DIY Playbook
What do you keep in your bag? Anything specific you won’t leave home without?

DIY Time Out
Casey's Current Favs

1. Up by Jawbone: Finn and I recently purchased these Up bracelets and were are obsessed. Essentially, they’re tools to track your fitness, sleep, mood, etc. They calculate how many steps you take throughout the day, they track your quality of sleep, and you can even enter your food into the iPhone app. It’s incredibly addicting especially since we’re so competitive. The bracelet easily plugs into your iPhone and you can update your progress multiple times throughout the day. We really like them because most of my family has the bracelet too and we can compete with encourage one another and stay connected everyday. It’s a little pricey at $129, but if you’re interested in improving your lifestyle…it might be worth the purchase!

2. Dior Addict Lip Glow: I’m not a big lipstick girl. I just think it looks way too fake on me. That’s why I’m loving this “lip glow” instead. It goes on clear, but within seconds your natural lip color is deepened. It wears differently on different lips, but it is just the right amount of color for everyone!

3. Clarisonic Mia Sonic Skin Cleansing System: This little gadget is a lifesaver. It makes my skin look so dewy and glowy. I use it to wash my face and neck in the shower every other day or so. It gets all of my makeup off, and really makes my skin feel (& look!) fresh.

4. Makeup Forever, HD Microfinish Powder: Since I’m on-camera for my day job, I often get asked lots of questions about makeup. Now, I’m no pro and I’ve tried many many different “looks” for the camera. But this powder is the one consistent item in my beauty bag. It’s specifically for high-definition cameras, but it is perfect for the everyday too. I typically put on all of my makeup, and then do a light coating (a little bit goes a long way) of this powder all over my face to finish. It gets rid of any shine, and goes on translucent. If you’re looking for a new powder, this is it. Seriously.

5. The 5 Love Languages, By Gary Chapman: They boy and I are currently making our way through this book. Don’t get me wrong, we have a fantastic relationship! But we also know that every relationship takes hard work, commitment, and most importantly communication! In order to really prepare for marriage, we’re reading this book together. We do a chapter every week, and then do a study guide of questions (found here) every Sunday. It’s a great way to work together to prep for our new life as husband and wife.
