Our Cozy Chicago Master Bedroom

NIghstand-in-bedroom

It seems like our master bedroom is just about done and decorated. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll forever be tweaking things here and there…but for now, our cozy master bedroom is staying as is! To celebrate this mini success, I thought we could chat all about the space and how it has evolved since we moved in last year.

When we first found our apartment last October, this room was empty and in need of a good paint job. Before moving in we painted the room “Argos” by Sherwin Williams. Now a year later, and I’m still in love with the color. The bluish-gray is a gorgeous neutral and it really works well in this small space. When all of our belongings arrived from St. Louis, we got to work finding a layout for our furniture. Because this room is itty bitty…this is literally the only layout that made sense. One dresser on the right, one nightstand on the left, and our long black dresser across from the bed. It may seem wonky or unbalanced, but it is what it is. Of course I’d love to have a different setup, but when you’re a renter sometimes you just have to make due! Mirror-over-bedBedroom-DresserNIghstand-in-bedroomI have to admit that I do miss having two night stands, especially since the Mr. is terrible at hearing out alarm in the morning. There have been many a time when I get up, walk over to the other side of the bed, turn off the blaring alarm, and grunt at Finn who is blissfully unaware of any commotion. I would suggest that we just switch sides of the bed but the right side is my side. So perhaps I need to move the alarm clock to my side of the bed. (Side Note: That is definitely not our alarm clock in the picture. Ours is a humongous electronic thing that is hideous. That cute clock is my go-to stand in for blog pictures. #bloggersecrets But that is our white noise machine hiding behind the lamp. That thing is amazing and a total sleeping lifesaver)Casey-in-reflection

We get a good amount of natural light in this room, as our windows face the east. But, so as not to wake up at sunrise we have blackout shades that are usually drawn tight, with nice bamboo shades over the roller ones. Plus, the building across the way might get quite the peep show if we kept them open while getting ready each morning.

Bedroom-Dresser-Lamp

I chose to keep most of our accessories and lighting very light and neutral, to go along with the calming atmosphere of the room. White accents, white lamps, and large-scale “art” help give the room a cohesive look. Feet-on-rugPouf-ShoesI’m still obsessed with our shag rug. It hasn’t shed much at all and it’s still just about the coziest spot in our home. I swear one of these days I’m going to come home to find Finn curled up like a ball napping peacefully on this bad boy. IMG_9728IMG_9762Like most spots in our home, our bedroom features lots of personal touches. Like our “His” & “Hers” signs, wedding date game pieces, and of course our large picture ledge wall. Dresser-Wide-Shot

JewelryMost of my jewelry still stays tucked away in our white jewelry cabinet. I think I’ll have that thing forever, it’s a total lifesaver. I also like to showcase a few extra sparkly things on this HomeGoods cake tray. It’s fun to add a little glitz and glam to the stark black dresser.

Picture-Ledge-Art

As for the picture ledge wall, it has been so fun switching out the frames and art on it. It changes quite frequently as we collect new mementos and print out new pictures. I still love the combo of the black and white frames up here. Picture-LedgesOur-First-HOmeReading-on-bedAll in all, I’m very happy with our cozy bedroom. We didn’t have much space to work with, yet we somehow managed to fit all of our clothes and bedroom belongings in here. It’s a fabulous place to rest our heads at the end of a very long day.casey_sig

Thanks for the great ideas! I loved this headboard so much I made it myself. I found some great affordable vinyl for only $6.95 a yard and bought some foam and buttons and it put it together it was easier than I thought and looks amazing.

A Modern & Masculine Condo Makeover

masculine bar cart
When we started this little blog, we had no idea that people would consider us “experts” in the home decorating field. We still consider ourselves to be hardcore rookies when it comes to interior decorating. However, we’ve certainly learned a few tricks along the way, and we’re always happy to share what we learn with our friends and family.
Recently a few friends have asked for our help decorating their own homes, and we’ve eagerly jumped at the chance to lend a hand. It’s fun for us because we get to tackle spaces that are new-to-us, and we often get to incorporate new styles and colors that you might not find in our own homes.
So when a good friend invited us to come decorate his Chicago condo…we cleared our schedules and happily jumped at the chance to help him out!
Family-Room-Before
Our “client”, Mehul, recently purchased an amazing condo in the West Loop area of Chicago. It’s a gorgeous one bedroom, with a sleek and modern feel. However, Mehul really didn’t have much going on in the space. In fact, it looked like no one really lived there at all! He did have some furniture (a couch, table, chair, and TV), but that was about it.  Mehul works 6 days a week and therefore doesn’t have much time to devote to decorating his home…so he called us in to help him out. And boy were we happy to help!
Messy TV cords
Here are some of the before shots of the space. You can see Mehul lives like a typical man. Big flat screen TV and a big comfy couch. He’s pretty minimalistic…no books, no knickknacks, no picture frames….really not a whole heck of a lot to work with. We knew a few shopping trips were definitely in our future…
He did request that we keep the space looking masculine and modern, and he didn’t want it to feel too cluttered. “Masculine” & “Modern”….oh boy this was going to be a fun new direction for these 2 gals….
He also asked if we could incorporate some personal elements into the space to make it feel a bit “homier.” Now that we could definitely handle…

After a half dozen shopping trips, we had tons of new fun decor for Mehul’s pad. Family room

We brought the sleek silver bookcase into the room to serve as an entertainment center. Instead of resting on the floor, the TV box now has an inconspicuous place to call home. The bookcase also gave us a great area to display family photos and quotes.  We tried to keep everything within the blue/gray/silver family to show off the great paint colors that Mehul had already chosen for his walls.
Modern Bookshelf
As for the accessories,we tried our best to be as “modern” as possible. Pops of silver, geometric patterns, and cool tones helped us stay on track. We also purchased some storage pieces like the small marbled box and large gray patterned one (both finds from HomeGoods!)2014_4_Mehul's Man Cave
Mehul also requested that we bring in a few Chicago/city elements into the space. Lucky for us, he had a street artist paint a gorgeous mural for us to incorporate into the family room. It added quite a bit of color and definitely helped to show off Mehul’s Chicago pride.
Modern bookshelf and bar sign
We also found a really cool Chicago map at Target (in the background of the above photo) to hang on the wall.
Coffee table tray
A geometric tray on the coffee table helped corral magazines, remote controls, and coasters that used to just sit haphazardly on the couch.
2014_4_Mehul's Man Cave1
We also hung a few more family photos in sleek black frames, and even added this Chicago watercolor print to show even more hometown love.
Family room and kitchen condo
Bar Cart
You guys all know we have a special place in our hearts for bar carts (here’s Casey’s & here’s Bridget’s!) So it shouldn’t surprise you that we wanted to incorporate a little entertaining area into Mehul’s family room.  We found this modern bar cart on Overstock, and ordered it immediately. These 2 rookies opened the box and after a few cuts, curse words, and bruised egos (putting stuff together can be rather difficult)…we officially had a sweet bar cart.
We found the various decanters at thrift stores and estate sales, all for less than $10 a piece. The silver martini shaker and ice bucket are both finds from HomeGoods.
Mehul lived in Kentucky while attending school, so we decided to include some of his awesome Kentucky Derby cups onto the cart. Gotta add a little personality here and there..right?!
Now he is all ready to have some friends over for a cocktail (or two!) just in time for summer. We think they’ll be rather impressed with his swanky bar cart setup.
One last look at the boring before…and now the after.

Thanks to a couple shopping trips to purchase some fun accessories, his condo now feels like an actual home. He can come back after working long days, pour himself a drink, and sit back and enjoy new space.

Chicago Skyline Watercolor – Free Printable

Chicago
About a month ago, I introduced everyone to our new and improved picture ledge wall. So far we have been absolutely loving it! I’ve had so much fun rearranging and changing out all of the frames and art whenever inspiration strikes.
I want to show you an updated piece of “art” that we recently added to our little master bedroom display…
Ikea picture ledge
See that blue watercolor all the way to the left in the display? That’s the new addition.
I took the photo when we did a boat tour last summer. I always loved the picture, but never really did much with it. Once the waterlogue app came out, I put my picture through the app and voila….my picture was instantly a beautiful piece of art! (Bridget recently did the same for St. Patrick’s Day in this post. Such a cool gift or personalized piece of art..right?!)
Chicago watercolor in frame
The blues, greens, and whites fit perfectly in our room. It adds a bit of color to the wall, without being too overwhelming. I’m in l.o.v.e. with it!

Chicago Themed Gift Basket

Chicago-Themed-Basket

This morning I revealed our big move from St. Louis to Chicago. #excitingtimes

I’ve been back in Chicago for a few weeks now, but Finn just moved back this weekend. To welcome him to our new hometown, I had a cute little gift basket awaiting his arrival.

Chicago themed gift basket

I decided it would be fitting to go with a Chicago theme for his gift, and it took me no time at all to pack a basket full of fun stuff.

Here’s what I tucked inside…

Goose Island 312

Some Goose Island 312 beer, since it’s brewed in Chicago and “312” is Chicago’s area code.

Chicago map

A Chicago street map, since we’ll most likely be getting lost over the next few months!

Chicago bears keychain

A Chicago Bears bottle opener and season schedule, so he can crack open those 312’s while cheering on the Bears this Fall.

Chicago magazine

Chicago magazine so he can learn the latest and greatest about our new city.

Lou malnatis gift card

A Lou Malnati’s gift card, because it is by far our favorite deep dish pizza. Yumm-o, I could go for a slice right now!

CTA pass

And a couple of CTA passes, so he can get around the city this week at work.

Welcome to Sweet home Chicago

He love love loved this gift! I think it was the perfect way to begin this next chapter of our lives.

This gift fit our situation, but I really believe it could be tailored for any city. Maybe as a way to show a friend who has moved away, that you’re thinking about them? Maybe as a way to welcome new neighbors into your area? Get creative and show off the treasures of your town!
