Blogger Stylin’ Home Tour – My Favorite Room

Wide-Family-Room

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again. The blogging community is chock full of so many wonderful and talented people, and we’re so happy to call many of them friends. Earlier this month, one of our new blogging friends invited us to take part in her “Blogger Stylin’ Home Tour Series” and we jumped on board right away.favorite-room-edition-graphic[Side Note: If you haven’t heard of Lindsay from The White Buffalo Styling Co. then this is your official invite to go love on this crazy talented chick. We admire her laid-back bohemian style, and can’t wait to see what this mama-to-be has in store for her future daughter’s nursery. If it’s anything like she has done in the past, it’s going to be insanely gorgeous.]

Okay, back to the home tour series. This week we’re joining over 2 dozen other bloggers to share a favorite room from our home. All this week we’ve gushed over the gorgeous details that so many of these talented ladies have incorporated into their spaces, and today it’s time for us to show off our space.

So if you just came from Caitlin’s fav room from Desert Domicile, then welcome to DIY Playbook. Today, I (Casey) am going to show off my favorite room in our small Chicago apartment. Wide-Family-RoomThis is our living room, and it really is heart of our home. We live in a small 1.5 bedroom, 1.5 bathroom apartment, and our family room area is the place we often gather. Not just because we have nowhere else to hang (small home problems), but because it is such a comfortable and welcoming spot.

We have a large white sectional that is so dang comfy, and it’s offers the perfect spot to cozy up and relax after a long day of work.  I’ve also filled the couch with soft blankets and textured pillows to make the space even more luxurious. My fiance says I have a pillow hoarding problem, but I like to think of it as a collection. #agreetodisagree

Shelf-Details

I love this space because I believe it truly reflects our style, while showcasing some of our personal mementos and treasures. The large white couch is a great neutral piece, and I enjoy accenting it with grays, blues, and teals to add some personality. The coffee table, side table, and wood shelves are all DIY projects that didn’t break the bank.

Chicago-Record-Album

Matches-in-bowlMany of the accessories are flea market finds, items from HomeGoods, or treasures my fiance and I have collected over the years (like our bowl of matches from our favorite date nights.)

Table-TrayBe-Happy-SignYou’ll also find a homemade pallet sign with a sentiment we enjoy as a visual reminder. It says “Be Happy” and this space truly does make us feel pretty darn happy. NightstandCanvas-and-shelvesThis light-filled room is my favorite spot to hang on a leisurely weekend morning. Usually I’ll wake up pretty early and let Finn sleep in. Then I’ll make a nice big bowl of cereal, some hot coffee, and I’ll cozy up on a sun-filled spot and let the morning pass at a nice leisurely pace.

It’s a great time to catch up on blogging, read magazines, and just take a breather before the chaos of the day.

Casey-Drinking-CoffeeSo there you have it. My favorite room in our small Chicago pad. It’s a space that truly reflects what the word home means to me: happy, comfortable, and inviting.

Now I urge you to go check out the next gorgeous space in our little blog hop. Go check out Traci’s favorite room over on Beneath My Heart.

And for even more eye candy, check out all of the spaces from the talented group below. They’ll be showing off their fav rooms all this week.

I actually found it a couple years ago at a resale shop for about $25! It was quite the steal. It’s probably 1.5 feet…pretty big and amazing. Keep searching! Hopefully someday you’ll find your own

      Gigi,
Thanks so much! Chi-town misses you, but Colorado is so beautiful too! We hope you love your new city.

The cityscape was actually a HomeGoods find from a couple years ago. Only $100…quite the score!

      Thanks for tuning in!
      Casey

New Lamps for the Master Bedroom

White-Bedroom-Lamp

I’m chugging along with our master bedroom decorating plan. Last time we chatted about the space, I showed you guys the oh-so-comfy Moroccan rug we added to the room. I’m still obsessed with it, and luckily there hasn’t been much shedding at all (which is great with a new rug!)

Pouf-ShoesWith the rug crossed off my list, it was time to move onto lighting. Lamps are important in this room, because we have absolutely no overhead lighting. Before we moved in our furniture, we painted the master bedroom walls and I remember frantically calling my mom to bring over a lamp because there were zero lights in the room, and no lights = no painting. (Lucky for us, she came to the rescue!)

So since we moved in, we’ve had 2 table lamps in here that were doing a fine job…but they weren’t winning any awards in the looks department.

IMG_97241Here’s one of the lamps atop our large dresser. I remember buying the lamps right out of college, and they had a black base. I eventually spray painted the lamps to get a brighter look in our bedroom. But wear and tear started to take its toll on the metal base, and the white paint started to flake off. Not cute.

So, I knew it was time to find something new and fabulous for our master bedroom.

Bedroom-Dresser-Lamp

I ended up finding 2 glamorous white lamps from HomeGoods. They were only $40 a piece, and I absolutely loved the shiny white base, with silver detailing.

NightstandOne sits on our dresser, the other on this nightstand. When I saw them at HomeGoods, they had 2 entirely different lamp shades. One was gray, and the other blue. But I loved the lamp base so much that I decided to bring them home, and just worry about the shades later on.

Turns out the old lamp shades fit perfectly, so now they’re matching. (Now I’m stuck with 2 random lamp shades…I just may have to come up with a creative craft for those…hmmmm)

Silver-Lamp-BaseI think they add a little glam to the room, without being too overwhelmingly feminine. At least that’s what I tell Finn. He says they look like snowmen…

White-Bedroom-LampDresser-Top-New-LampI suppose if they’re snowmen, then they’re some damn good lookin’ snowmen. I’m just happy that they’re functional and fashionable. That’s always a win-win in our playbook!

Next on the master bedroom list? No more naked bed for us….this bad boy is getting a headboard! All the deets and eye candy coming next week…

I was just admiring some very similar lamps on Amazon (the $40 price you got is better!!). I love the white bases and they look great of your side tables!

Cranberry Christmas Centerpiece

Christmas-Vase

Happy Christmas Eve everyone!

I hope your holiday shopping is all done and you’ve enjoyed plenty of Christmas cookies (I know I have! #tummyache)

If you’re looking to add some last minute holiday cheer to your household, then today’s project might be up your alley. This project is unique, easy, and will take you hardly any time at all.

Cranberry Christmas Centerpiece

It’s a cranberry Christmas vase. This little guy could be great in your kitchen, on your Christmas tablescape, or just tucked somewhere alongside your holiday decor.

All you need are fresh cranberries from the grocery store, a large clear vase, a floating candle, and some artificial greenery. Simply stick the greenery in the vase, add water, and throw your cranberries and candle on top.

Fresh cranberries

My mom has been doing this for years and always receives so many compliments on it.

Rookie Tip #1: Be sure to change out the water every week or so. It can get a little cloudy.

Fresh cranberries and water

Rookie Tip #2: Also change out the fresh cranberries every 10-14 days so they stay red and vibrant.

Cranberry vase

When you hit up the grocery store to buy food for tomorrow’s Christmas feast, throw some cranberries in your cart. I’m telling ya you’re gonna love this red and green vase, and I know your guests will too.

Suz, what a good idea to use fresh eucalyptus. That will look amazing. The candle is from Crate & Barrel, but from a few years back. I think they still sell some nice floating ones though. Good luck & Merry Christmas!
