The DIY Playbook is rounding up our FALL FANTASY DRAFT week with a project for the home.
Technically this project is for the outside of the home…but hey, we don’t want to limit our creativity, so outside will just have to do! We’ll slap a Home and Garden tag on it and call it a day! One of my favorite parts about DIY projects is when you take something that is heading to the garbage, and find a new life for it. That is exactly what happened with this project.
My mom has this old, rusty wheelbarrow that she uses in her yard for mulching. Well the thing was on its last wheel leg…as the wheel was pretty deflated and useless. She was just going to wheel it out to the garbage, and say her goodbyes. But that’s when we thought of a new purpose for the ol’ guy!
With a little creativity it went from a wheelbarrow…
…to a Fall planter, in no time at all!
At first we thought we should spray paint our new “planter”, but ultimately we decided we liked the rustic look that this guy had going on. The worn, red color gave it an autumn feel and we knew that would fit perfectly with the plants and flowers we had in mind.
The first thing we did was drill holes in the bottom of wheelbarrow. This is to ensure proper drainage for the plants. With the help of a large drill bit, electric drill, and some safety goggles…we had 5 holes in no time at all.
Next, we found a spot in my mom’s front yard and wheeled this sucker into place. We decided to angle the nose of the wheelbarrow down, so onlookers would have a great view of the plants.
To do this we simply dug the wheel into the dirt a bit and slid her into place.
We knew the planter might be a little bottom heavy, and we didn’t want the wheelbarrow to ever flip forward. So, we used wire to hammer the back into place. This sucker wasn’t going anywhere.
Finally, it was just a matter of filling our new “planter” with soil and our fall favorites.
We included mums, kale, phoenix green, swiss chard, and creeping jenny. They’re all supposed to grow well during these crisper days. We’ll see if we can keep them all alive and healthy!
Isn’t she a beaut?
We think it shows that our house is all ready for the changing season.
We hope you guys loved our FALL FANTASY WEEK as much as we did! Be sure to check out Michelle’s, Clare’s, and Sarah & Tiffany’s projects out for some serious fall inspiration.

Thanks Michelle, for kicking off our fantasy draft in style. We are so lucky to have you and all of your craft expertise on our dream team!! Stay tuned for tomorrow’s amazing recipe from Offbeat & Inspired where we can pretty much guarantee you’ll leave hungry- consider yourself warned…
If your significant others are anything like ours, then during this time of year their fantasy football team is top of mind. Casey’s +1 literally spends all day Sunday glued to the TVs (yes, that was plural…he sets up 2 TVs!) yelling, screaming, cheering, and cursing as he coaches his “players” through gameday.
After observing all of the craziness behind fantasy football, us rookies got to thinking. Why can’t we have our own fantasy draft? But instead of football…maybe we could have a fantasy blog draft! We would recruit our favorite bloggers from all across the web, and create the ultimate DREAM TEAM of talent. Yes…this would be far more glorious than football.
So that’s exactly what we did. We reached out to some of our fav bloggers and asked them to join our fantasy team. And considering the time of year, we decided to give the entire draft a “fall theme.”
Just like in fantasy football, our team has a wide variety of talent. Each one of these ladies is considered an “expert” in their field, and together they create our dream team.
Here’s our starting lineup….
We’ve got the adorable Michelle from the blog Iron & Twine. This girl’s home is just as cute as she is (you can check it out here.) She’ll be the craft expert on our team.
Next up, Sarah & Tiffany from the blog Offbeat & Inspired. We met these two lovelies at the Haven conference and were instantly drawn to their friendly personalities and spot on style. Their blog is a concoction of food, style, and home…all with absolutely gorgeous photography. These two are whipping up a fall recipe that will not disappoint and will act as our food experts on the dream team.
Many of our readers also check out Clare over at Fitting It All In. Casey and Clare are friends from college and she actually inspired us to make DIY Playbook a reality. Clare blogs about fitness, food, and life. She is always keeping it real with her readers, and that’s something we admire and appreciate in a blog. Clare will act as our fitness expert.
We’ll bring up the rear on Friday as the home (and garden.. hint, hint) experts and we’ll showcase a fun fall project for the home.
So what do you say? Are you ready to take the fall season by storm? We sure are! Tune in all week to hear from our fall favorites, starting tomorrow morning as we get the 411 from our craft expert… trust us- you do not want to miss this colorful masterpiece.
