Remember back in October when we jetsetted off to the Big Apple?! Well, while we were visiting NYC we had one place on the very tippy-top of our must-see list…
CENTRAL PARK! We spent a lovely morning sipping our coffees, people watching, and just strolling through the lush park. It was a glorious way to start our day and we just had to capture that exact moment so we would remember it forever. We decided to take a picture and create a watercolor print with the waterlogue app…that way we would have a visible reminder of the beautiful morning.
We’ve done a few other watercolors here on the blog before, like this Chicago skyline print and this Chicago Green River print. Both awesome art and staples in our homes. But it was nice to change it up a bit and incorporate a new city into our watercolor repertoire. Plus you guys know we love bringing home non-tacky souvenirs from our travels…and this seemed like the perfect treasure from our trip. Meet our newest Central Park FREE Watercolor Print.
The vibrant colors in the watercolor really pop against a crisp white frame, and it’s visual enough to stand on its own in a little tabletop vignette. The best part about this print is it is absolutely FREE. You can have this watercolor print hanging in your home in a New York minute by downloading it here and pressing PRINT. Boom instant art for your gallery wall, bookshelf, or even mix it up with other frames on a picture ledge.
We’re very much in love with the hint of fall this print brings into our homes. If these yellowy leaves and picturesque setting don’t get you into the seasonal spirit…then heck I don’t know what will!
So let’s consider this our little trip souvenir for YOU! Whichever way you style it, we hope you enjoy our NYC memento and the instant cheer it brings into your home.
Why always run out and BUY when there are just as many amazing resources for FREE? Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Etsy and spend entirely more than my rookie salary suggests I should spend on Etsy, but I also love the challenge of trying to do it for less. Isn’t that what DIY is virtually all about? The hunt. The adventure. The personal touch. Whatever “it” is at the time, it’s always fun to get a look for less. In today’s case, “it” was my office gallery wall. A few months ago, “it” was the gallery wall in the laundry room. I love Etsy, but I also love me FREE. Today, free it is! I’m here to share my gallery wall prints, so you can get FREE too.
Ironically, first up in the gallery wall line-up is not a printable, but it was FREE to me. I made this string art a few years back with Casey. I was using it somewhere else in the house, but decided to give it some new life by adding it to the wall. Although it won’t be free to you, I can offer a free tutorial. #excusetheawfulphotos #babyblogrookies
Next up- this fun FREE printable from Classy Clutter. (Have you seen some of their makeovers? Amazing!!! You have to check them out, they are adorable & so talented)
Random Horn Hook- clearance at HomeGoods.
This one is possibly my favorite. With a little washi tape, I stuck that bad boy right on the wall and cannot get enough. “You’re a gem…” I just love it. The watercolor. The geometric hints. The message. Perfection…all yours FREE!
The modern hexagons totally stole my heart. I love how this frame compliments the shapes and colors of the print. I added the metal “58” numbers and styled it a little different, but I just love the simplicity. You have to check out how Nalle added a little gold for a super creative edgy look.
This weather vane (?) was actually a $2 thrift store find. It used to be gold, and unfortunately, not a cute kind of trendy gold. An ugly, tarnished, off-gold. I added a little white & teal spray paint. Super easy, totally worth the two bucks.
This enlarged print came with our wedding package. Call me crazy, but I absolutely love it. Like I mentioned earlier this week, I was totally inspired by Deanne’s print and knew I needed to incorporate this preppy look into our home.
Both of the storage drawers on top of the desk were from HomeGoods. They are home to some office essentials, and the little boxes to the right hold all of our cords… separately. #lovethat
The wishbone on the bulletin board can be found here. But you have to check out how Jen used it in her gold & glamorous office gallery wall. G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S!
And last but not least, the three prints that mean the most to me. I wanted to create three pieces of very simple art that reflects my outlook on… well, life really.
Work Hard. Be Kind. Stay Humble.
If there were three rules I hope to live by and stay true to, I hope it is these three simple phrases. And what better way to remind myself of these truths than through a constant reminder in our home?
And that’s exactly what I did. I created 3 printables and hung them in our office to constantly remind us to always….
1. Work Hard.
2. Be Kind.
3. Stay Humble.
And because I heart you all so much (and owe these fabulously creative people who shared their creativity with me!), I decided to share these free printables with the internet world.. and of course, all of you. You can choose to print one of the quotes, all of the quotes or mix & match the colored and white version of the prints to remind yourself of the importance of work ethic, humility, and respect.
It doesn’t take much to mix up a reason to celebrate around here- and today is no different. In honor of the SUMMER and lots of sunshine to come, we are officially celebrating by sharing this bright & happy FREE printable with you guys today!
Because we can’t reach through the screen and give you a big ol’ HUG for all of the love & support that you show by coming here each and everyday to see what we’re up to… a polka dotted printable seemed like the next best thing.
We think this pop of cheer can be the perfect addition to a gallery wall, a fun note to stick on a message board, or even a tag to add to your next summer BBQ hostess gift. So regardless of how you use it… we hope you love it and find some time to celebrate all that this gorgeous sunshine has to offer! To download your FREE printable, just click HERE & press PRINT!
Speaking of celebrating sunshine, I am extremely fortunate to have the chance to do A LOT of that lately. As many of you already know, my real job (you know… the one that pays the bills) is being a high school teacher. Thanks to this career choice, I am on summer vacation and soaking up lots of rest, quality time with the hubby (who is also a teacher on summer vacay), quality time with my sisters (both teachers as well) and checking off my DIY/blog to do list a little quicker than usual.
Since I typically don’t talk about my day job here on the Playbook, I thought I would take this chance to give you a crash course on a few random bits of info you may not know about me & my day job.
I work at the same high school where both Casey and I graduated
I pass both Casey’s and my high school locker about once a week
…Still remember the combination (they changed it… I’ve tried)
I work at the same high school as Matt (although our workplace is not his alma mater)
Matt & I met outside of the copy room about 4 years ago. No one at work knew we were dating for at least a year, maybe more. Actually, some colleagues found out we were dating after we were married & some probably still don’t know.
I co-teach with two teachers that I had in high school and I am grateful to work alongside them as a colleague now
I have two Master’s degrees in Education related fields and I never anticipate going back to school … ever again
Casey has come into my class as a guest speaker to talk about her career in broadcast journalism- I couldn’t have been more proud to give this opportunity to my students & allow them to hear her professional words of wisdom.
All of my sisters are also teachers and we all share our summer vacations, winter breaks, spring breaks & school holidays! #luckygirls
I coach varsity girls’ golf every fall
**I am on summer vacation until August and will be CELEBRATING SUNSHINE until then! Although you may not be a teacher & blessed with this generous time off, I still hope you find time to celebrate sunshine this summer too!
Thank you for taking this crazy DIY journey with us each and every day (you have no idea how much it means to us). We wish you all an amazing start of summer and lots of opportunity to celebrate the sunshine all season long. You deserve it!! Xo.
About a month ago, I introduced everyone to our new and improved picture ledge wall. So far we have been absolutely loving it! I’ve had so much fun rearranging and changing out all of the frames and art whenever inspiration strikes.
I want to show you an updated piece of “art” that we recently added to our little master bedroom display…
See that blue watercolor all the way to the left in the display? That’s the new addition.
I took the photo when we did a boat tour last summer. I always loved the picture, but never really did much with it. Once the waterlogue app came out, I put my picture through the app and voila….my picture was instantly a beautiful piece of art! (Bridget recently did the same for St. Patrick’s Day in this post. Such a cool gift or personalized piece of art..right?!)
The blues, greens, and whites fit perfectly in our room. It adds a bit of color to the wall, without being too overwhelming. I’m in l.o.v.e. with it!
The best part about this Chicago watercolor? You can add it to your home for FREE. Just download the link below and print it out on a card stock or thick paper. Pop that bad boy in a frame and you’ll have some Chicago pride in your home in no time at all.
Today’s St. Patrick’s Day DIY combines three of my favorite things – – Chicago + Irish + Tradition… and mixes these three things using one of my new obsessions – – the waterlogue app for iPhones & iPads.
Like I mentioned earlier in the week, Chicago is filled with lots of Irish tradition and a lot of green celebration this time of year. As I prepare for a weekend of celebrating in Chicago, I found myself scrambling for meaningful, GREEN, and creative gifts for some of the amazing Irish people in my life.
Usually our family exchanges some sort of a little Irish gift, and I wanted my contribution to be unique and meaningful… without breaking the bank of course. This is what I cooked up this year…
A personalized watercolor picture of one of my all-time favorite Chicago traditions. (For you non-Chicago readers, this pic is a snapshot of the famous Chicago river being dyed GREEN for St. Patty’s Day. The plumber’s union started this annual tradition years & years ago and still dye the river to this day. It’s truly amazing to see the river transform into a sea of neon green within minutes! Chicagoans crowd the river to watch the plumbers work their magic while listening to bagpipers. Once the river is dyed, the crowd heads a few blocks to watch the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade roll through Grant Park).
I especially love this tradition because it has grown to be more than just a unique Chicago tradition, but more a day I look forward to spending in the city with the O’Connor clan. A picture of our staple tradition seemed like the perfect fit for this year’s Irish gift.
Not to mention this was like easiest/cheapest gift ever! (Could be the PERFECT hostess gift this weekend.. hint, hint my fellow Chicago peeps).
To make this (or one like it)
1. Plug the image of choice into the waterlogue app on your iPhone or iPad
2. Swoon at its beauty
Because we LOVE our readers (and realize that we get a lot of reader love from the Chicagoland area), we want to share this amazing print with you… FREE. Download your own Chicago Green River Printable HERE. Slap it in a frame and use it for a festive hostess gift this weekend… or just plop it on your shelf for your guests to enjoy as they celebrate!
I love, love, love the picture itself and adore the meaning and tradition that lies within this snapshot.
I got these fun straws from the $1 section @ Target (ironically, another one of my favs) and used them as embellishments on the green packages…
Cheers to YOU finding some time to celebrate the luck of the Irish over the next week. If greens not your thing, I hope you at least have a chance to download the waterlogue app and play around. Seriously, a.m.a.z.i.n.g and dripping with framing potential…. all FREE! Irish or not, this just became your LUCKY DAY. Cheers.
Last chance to download this FREE PRINTABLE in honor of one of Chicago’s greatest holiday traditions….
It’s not even February, but the mushy-gushy-lovey-dovey Valentine’s Day blog posts have already begun. And yes, we’ve hopped aboard the love train (yup, that love train.). As we said in this post, we’re not head over heels in love with this holiday, instead we are pretty smitten with “love” all year round. Today’s project is something that is definitely fitting for that upcoming holiday, but it’s also pretty awesome for any ol’ day of the year.
We’ve created 2 FREE PRINTABLES for you guys to enjoy, each featuring “our song” with our handsome +1’s.
First up, Casey & Finn’s printable showcases the song “Everything” by Michael Buble. It’s been a favorite of theirs since high school and (spoiler alert!) they’ll be dancing to it at their October wedding. Like these two aren’t cute enough?! Now they get to share a first dance to a song they’ve probably been practicing since high school.
Our song is “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” by Frankie Valli. Ironically, it was the first dance we ever danced to when we were dating, so it just seemed like the perfect choice to share our official first dance to. Plus, Matt and I like to think we’re pretty old fashioned, which seems accurately reflected in this classic.
We suggest printing out your favorite printable onto cardstock, framing it, and giving it to that special someone. Or keep it for yourself and add it to your gallery wall! Either way we know every time you look at this bad boy you’ll have one of these songs stuck in your head #sorrywe’renotsorry
Yup, as the grand finale of one of my favorite times of the year, Matt and I are making it official as Mr. & Mrs. I plan to share all of our wedding details soon but wanted to give you a sneak peek into our big day with a little teaser. Here’s a little inside scoop on a part of our groomsmen gifts.
Socks! Because like the FREE PRINTABLE says, “we don’t want anyone to have cold feet, especially tomorrow”. Heck, maybe I should wear a pair too?!
Our groomsmen will wear one style, the groom will wear another and our dads will wear the last style.
All we (and yes, I mean WE… Matt crafted in our honor of his favorite guys #hesakeeper) had to do to finish this little gift was:
1. buy the socks
2. print the free printable
3. cut the free printable
4. hole punch the tag
5. tie a ribbon around the packaging of the socks
6. Wrap ’em up!
I mean seriously, how cute are these socks?
My bridesmaids are wearing white and the gentlemen are wearing black and white, so I opted for plain white paper. I think this printable would work for any wedding with some creative paper and ribbon that fits your bridal party color scheme.
I can’t wait to see all of our handsome gentlemen rocking warm feet and trendy socks, but more importantly, I can’t wait to dance all night long alongside my handsome groom and his adorable argyle socks.
What types of creative groomsmen gifts have you seen or loved?
Today we are mixing two things we l.o.v.e. here on the DIY Playbook: cookies and mason jars. Although very different, this delicious project incorporates our favorite little jars with some sweet treats to create an adorable and edible cookie in a jar.
And since we L.O.V.E all of our readers almost as much as we love mason jars and chocolate chip cookies, we are also throwing in a FREE Printable for you to create your own jar of warm and gooey love!
These little tags are the perfect reminder of the importance of celebrating LOVE! Who doesn’t need a little extra reminder of how truly special that four letter word really is every once in a while? Thanksgiving, the holiday season, a wedding shower, or just because, this free printable has you covered.
Once you have the tags ready, it’s time for the real fun…. filling those jars.
Rookie Tip: When filling up your large mason jars with these ingredients, it’s important that you PACK each layer down as much as you can (you can use a small ladle in order to do this). Without packing the ingredients down, the jar will not be big enough to fit all of the chocolate chips and M&M’s at the end. We also used a napkin wrapped around a spatula to wipe the inside of the jar after we added the flour. The flour added some unwanted “flour residue” and the napkin spatula combo was the ticket in making sure that unwanted “fog” didn’t affect the clarity of the other layers.
Here’s the Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe:
To Fill the Jar:
Spoon and pack 1 1/2 cup of all purpose flour into the jar
add 1 tsp of baking powder and 1 tsp baking soda
add 1/4 tsp of salt
pack down 1 cup of oats
add 1/2 cup of brown sugar (packed)
add 1/2 cup of sugar
add 3/4 cups of M&M’s and 3/4 cups of semi sweet chocolate chips
To Bake the Cookies:
Empty all dry ingredients into a large bowl
Add one beaten egg, 1/2 cup of butter & one tsp of vanilla together
Slowly add your wet ingredients into the dry ingredients
Ball your mixture into 1 1/2 balls on parchment paper on a cookie sheet
Pop in a 350 degree oven for ten minutes.
Yields about 25 cookies!
Wrap a little fabric and some ribbon or string around the top of the lid with the free printable, and all that’s left to do is spread the LOVE. Enjoy!
All you have to do is download and print our FREE PRINTABLE and choose one of the 3 color combos for your tag.
Hole punch the top corner…
…and secure to your favorite bottle of bubbly with some string or ribbon.
I also think it would be neat to leave a note with the gift for the new tenants. Maybe offer up some advice about their new neighbors, or give them the insider scoop on the best restaurants nearby? I’m sure the new tenant will appreciate any and all inside info you can share.
If you’re not moving any time soon (lucky ducks!) then this also works as a great generic gift for new homeowners. Also be sure to check out the post we did on a basket of blessings for new homeowners (that’s a great idea too!)
Happy International Coffee Day! (Let’s face it…every day is coffee day for these two ladies!)
In honor of this momentous event (hey…it’s momentous to us!), we thought it would only be fitting to give you, our rock-star readers, a gift. Our gift to you: a FREE printable about one of our favorite morning rituals here on the DIY Playbook. You can print one for yourself, give one to your early morning co-worker, or even wrap one up as gift.
We added coffee rings (just like in this coffee post) to give the printable some DIY flair.
Just brew up a batch of joe, pour a little onto a plate, and have fun making messy rings all over the paper.
Be sure to let your paper dry and then pop it into your favorite frame.
We gave a framed “Coffee for Two” as a wedding shower gift to a fellow coffee lover. We snagged the coffee pot off her registry to make this coffee themed gift complete. She got what she wanted, and we were able to add a little bit of DIY creativity. Win, win right?
Get in on the coffee action and download your free printable here.
Have a great (caffeinated) Friday!
