We are almost a week away from our final patio reveal! If you haven’t read the series, you can catch up here, here, and here. In the meantime, allow me to give you the latest update before the BEST part- the dramatic before & afters. [dum, dum, dummmmmm]
So here’s a big tease look into the progress of our landscaping/patio makeover. Ladies and gentleman, we have finally passed the threshold of a lot less dirt and a lot more greenery! #winwin
We still have the netting/hay down on the lawn to keep the grass seeds on track of growing like a weed, actually forget I said that, too soon to be joking about weeds around here. (side note: remember when I upcycled that planter box? Those baby sweet potato vines have made us proud and gotten us a lot of neighborhood cred- a little something Matt and I refer to as our “street cred”). You know you’re old when your “street cred” is based on how well your plants have bloomed throughout the gardening season compared to those on the block…haha sad story.
Well, while Matt has been busy watering our new greenery and improving that street cred, I have been busy awaiting for the arrival of our patio furniture…we have to split up the work somehow, right? Since he’s been doing such a great job fostering our little seedlings into life, I could not disappoint on my end. So here’s my “almost there” updates…
We have patio furniture!! Since we said good-bye to our amazing landscapers (sorry guys, it was fun while it lasted), I’ve said hel-lo to an even more fabulous delivery man; a man who came bearing some serious baggage.
No, not the kind of baggage that came with that old boyfriend (no thank you), but my favorite kind of baggage. The kind of baggage that comes bearing amazing furniture, colorful pillows, and a whole lot of patio glam. Yes, please… Bring on the baggage!
The best part of this delivery is that it was delivered right to the house at a scheduled time that was convenient for us. There was no guessing on whether these boxes would be subject to the traditional UPS ding-dong ditch. These bad boys made a reservation and made sure we’d be waiting for them. How thoughtful, right? I love them already!
The next best part (especially for Matt) was that the furniture came PUT TOGETHER. Yup, no Allen wrenches, no cursing under your breath as you try and decipher directions that bring back unwelcomed memories of the ACT, and most importantly, no frustrated banter between you and your +1 as you try desperately put together a piece of furniture that should have been completed 3 hours ago!
You can throw that frustration out the window, Home Decorators Collection is all about convenience… and I WE appreciate it! HDC, thank you. Our growing to-do list thanks you, our relationship thanks you, and most importantly, our hatred for reading those directions thanks you… A LOT!
So here’s our Home Decorators Collection Patio Set. I picked the “surf” set but this also comes in a natural tan-ish color and a “spice” color that is a rich red. I loved all three options, but am glad I went with the surf… it just seemed appropriate for a nautical inspired home.
Before the big reveal, I do have one question… anyone have any creative ideas on what to do with these life size boxes?
Tune in next Friday to see how this amazing furniture fits in our new space. Until then, you’ll probably find me cuddled up on our new surf set or knee deep in some crazy cardboard craft.
Psssttt…. We’re giving away a $150 HOME DECORATORS COLLECTION gift card during our big reveal next week… stay tuned!!
Excuse the mess, we are currently knee deep in all things dirt, dust, and overall ugliness. As we mentioned before, the Longview Lodge is undergoing a facelift- complete with new landscaping, actual grass, fresh trees, and even a fabulous patio. We started off with this mess….
And now, thanks to our non-DIY landscaping skills, a group of hardworking professionals have transformed the original mess into a whole new level of ew. But trust me when I say: this craziness we call our property will be worth it in the end.
This is a pile of all the random roots that were hiding under the layer of weeds we used to call our lawn. I’m sure our lawnmower won’t miss running over these bad boys anymore.
Here are some progress pictures of our future patio (check out my vision for this future space here)!
It’s coming around… kinda?
These large holes will eventually be filled with some privacy pines. I’m thinking that “privacy pines” is not the official name for them, but you get the point.
No more weeds! Hip, Hip, Hoo-ray!
A large part of this landscaping remodel is based on installing a pipe system that will take care of any standing water on the property, hence the need to call in the professionals. These deep ditches will allow all of the gutter water to tie into this sophisticated drainage system that will be installed throughout the property.
While we’re landscaping, we decided to add a little more curb appeal to our front yard. The landscaping professional insisted that it would be best if we took out what we had and started from scratch. Rest assured that we found a new home for the old plants around our property, but took his advice and provided him with a blank slate for him to work.his.magic.
Clearly, we they still have quite a bit of work to do, but I could not be more excited to welcome whatever is in store. As they finish up, I’ll be busy shopping for some fun accessories to add to the patio furniture I recently purchased.
Choosing what patio furniture to purchase was no easy task, but after I finally decided, I couldn’t be more excited. I figured we should probably invest in a quality set that will last us, rather than purchasing a cheap set that will look worn and torn too quickly. The price tag was a bit more than I wanted to spend, but in the end, I think it was the best option for our space and circumstances.
Remember when I mentioned that our house was undergoing a landscape makeover, complete with a full patio? I explained that ever since we bought our house, the curb appeal was less than desirable. I think I was being far too generous when I referred to our landscaping as “undesirable”… you be the judge.
When we bought the house, there wasn’t a door leading out to this potential patio space. We knew one day we wanted the opportunity to entertain on a fabulous patio, so we had a window removed and replaced it with the door you see above.
For the past 9 months, this door has led to this secret garden of weeds, old tree stumps, and a whole lot of ugliness. Our “one day” is almost here, as we have added the patio blueprint to the landscaping makeover!
Standing on the “one day” patio looking out into the backyard, this is what you’d see. More weeds, old stumps, and unfortunately…even more ugliness.
Here’s a view of a walkway we hope to create leading to the patio. It’s so ugly, I don’t even think weeds want to hang out here.
We hope to ditch the red rock and take care of the random air vents that are so awkwardly being held up by old building materials…
And possibly the worst part of this whole makeover… this random hole. According to some local research, there used to be a huge willow tree in this space that fell over in a storm. The dirt that was brought in to fill the hole must have been from a swamp-like area, because we had all things swamp growing within this mystery. Cattails, swamp grass, muddy muck… it’s in there somewhere. It’s not that I don’t love a swamp now and then, I just don’t want one growing in my yard.
On a positive note, the front yard wasn’t home to many weeds. To be honest, the front yard wasn’t home to much of anything alive.
All of our grass died when we moved in and ironically, never fully grew back. So this patchy, brown, uneven front yard needed to be taken care of as well.
See what I mean? Hopefully with some new grass, our neighbors will stop wondering about the only brown lawn on the block.
While we’re at it, we hope to add a little more pizazz to this area as well. We plan to relocate what’s here and add some larger, more attractive plants. Hello fabulous curb appeal.
Clearly, our property needs some serious TLC. As much as I wish we could DIY this makeover, this job is far larger than this DIY Rookie and her handsome +1 can handle.
With a lot of debate, some serious research and tedious number crunching, we have decided to hire this project out to the professionals. Matt and I are excited to hand over our to-do list to some local pros and see how they can take this weed friendly space and transform it into one that can grow grass. Is that too much for a girl to ask?
