Patio Inspiration from Allen + Roth

Before Patio

Although it is always gratifying to check off projects from each of our home’s to do lists, we have found that it is far more rewarding (and so much fun) to team up together and help other’s fall more in love with their own homes by lending a helping hand. There’s just something about helping others create a space that they can be extra proud of that makes these two rookies blush. This blog has given us the opportunity to help others by doing what we love and doing it together… for that reason alone, all of the time, the stiff necks, and the addictions to social media are well, well worth it. (Well, at least that’s how we try and sell it to Matt & Finn) #theyrenotbuyingit

But let’s be real here, tackling another family’s space is not always sunshine & smiles. Yes, at the end of the process we’d like to think we left the place a little prettier than we found it, but throughout the actual makeover, we are a bundle of nerves hyped up on too much caffeine. Why? Pressure’s on!

Will the family love our makeover as much as we do?
The homeowners don’t necessarily share our style, will they like our decisions?
Are we hurting their feelings by ditching some of their prized possessions?
Will they even tell us if they hate it? #Probablynot
Is this paint ever going to freakin’ dry? (Sense the frustration?)
Are we going to come in under budget?!
We will make the deadline? If not, when the hell are we going to find time to coordinate our schedules again?! HURRRYYY!!!!

Taking on someone else’s space is SCARY! But because we love the reaction and the new sense of excitement each of the homeowners have after the fact (well.. so far at least), we try not to get our panties in too much of a bunch and we power through, one coffee & vanilla latte at a time.

So that’s exactly where we are at in the process with today’s Patio Makeover (yikes!). We have decided to team up and take on this patio in order to help the homeowners find the gorgeous outdoor charm that we know this little oasis has to offer.

The space is extremely functional right now, yet needs a little face lift. We promised the homeowners we would keep the function intact but would add a little more personality & a little more color.

We also promised that we would help make this space reflect THEIR style- one that is traditional, a tad rustic, and very warm.

So that’s exactly what we’re doing… choosing patio inspiration that fits the ticket for their space.

We chose to center the style around allen + roth’s patio line at Lowe’s. We think the pieces that allen + roth offer are SPOT ON with the traditional, cozy feel we are striving for in this space. The colors are warm and traditional, yet the pieces also hint very rich and rustic! Since the family spends a lot of quality time sitting around their current round patio table, we decided to go with the round look once again. Other than that, everything else will be getting a new look… because heck, isn’t that what a good before & after is all about?!
We’ll keep you updated on the transformation, of course! If you have any ideas… we’d love to hear them. In the meantime, excuse us while we set our timers and race toward the deadline.

Laundry Room Plans

A few weeks ago, I blogged about some MINOR laundry room updates & chatted about how I gave this neglected space a temporary fix. (little did I know just how “temporary” that fix would really turn out to be). After the post was published and I was looking back at the pictures, I quickly realized how much I disliked this room (and not because it was the room that was home to my not-so favorite chore). My intentions were there when I took small steps to decrease the ugliness, but these mini DIY projects were comparable to putting a band-aid on a life threatening wound… not working out too well. I needed more than a band-aid, more like a DIY doctor. *seriouslythough

Allow me to remind you of what the laundry room looked like when we moved in:

Don’t get my wrong, I’m NOT a huge brat that needs all new everything (or anything for that matter). And although I disliked the orange, glossy cabinets, which were actually the cabinets from our house’s original kitchen cabinets, I DID really appreciate the extra storage & their price tag…. FREE! When we moved in, I knew that this room would be on the DIY to-do list.

Fast forward a year & a half:

I tried to work around the “vintage” cabinets and bring pops of white, fun baskets, and anything else I could to add a little more “glam” to the space. I guess it was the thought that counted, but unfortunately, these items were like that useless band-aid & just seemed to highlight the old cabinets even more…#notwhatIwasgoingfor. As time passed, these old and greasy (and yes, I mean greasy from being in the old kitchen for 40+ years) cabinets moved further up my to-do list. I planned to tackle this project in the summer, when I was on summer vacation as a teacher, but I just couldn’t take it any longer. Spring hit and those darn cabinets had to go… immediately.
So that’s where I am today. In the process of DIY-ing the HECK out of this room. You can rest assured that I will definitely be keeping the cabinets (FREE sounds good to me!), but I will NOT, and I repeat NOT, be keeping the orange tint any longer. This is more along the lines of what I have in mind for this space…

B's Laundry Room Plans

I hope to bring far more WHITE into the space to create a more airy, clean look; one that will flow with the rest of the house. I hope to incorporate baskets and more opportunity for storage/hanging clothes to dry when necessary. I hope to bring in some colorful art to add a little personality to the space, and most importantly, I hope to get rid of the orange cabinets and never, ever look back! I may be biting off a little more than I can chew a little too close to the end of the school year, but heck… I’m determined to stop the bleeding regardless of how long the DIY surgery takes!
Hopefully, I’ll have some serious updates for you next week… stay tuned. In the meantime, any advice? Laundry room ideas? Cabinet tips? I’ll take all the help I can get…

Patio Inspiration

(Disclaimer: We have partnered with Home Decorators Collection to bring you this post. However, all opinions expressed are our own and are not influenced by Home Decorators Collection.)
This just in: Bridget’s getting a new patio and brand new landscaping!
It’s no secret around here that since we bought our house last November, the curb appeal has been less than desirable. Thankfully, that’s about to change. We are knee deep in a landscaping makeover, complete with a brand new patio (my favorite part of course).
Along with any patio comes a whole lot of decorating potential, which makes this dirty landscaping project a lot more tolerable. Today, I’m teaming up with the fabulous Home Decorators Collection to share my vision of my someday-soon, new outdoor living space. Here’s what I’m thinking:

Patio Inspiration from HDC

Source List Here

1. Home Decorators Collection (HDC) has teamed up with Martha Stewart Living to create patio furniture to die for. This color combo is the inspiration behind my whole patio remodel, but it also comes in a variety of other colors, like the amazing one Casey’s mom used to makeover her patio. I’m head-over-heels in love with the whole line.
2. HDC also hit a grand slam with this outdoor rug. I love the texture it provides while being neutral and calming all at the same time. To me, a outdoor rug is a perfect way to add coziness to outdoor spaces that can sometimes seem less than cozy.
3. This industrial light fixture would be the perfect contrast to our red brick house and new pavers! I can’t resist a fun light fixture, thanks HDC!
4. This little side table is perfect to add color, texture and a little bit of fun!
5. Crisp white is always my go-to accessory color and this bowl is the perfect ticket. I love its clean, fresh look. I’m envisioning some succulents in this bad boy or maybe an outdoor snack? Either way, it’s a keeper!
6. Outdoor clocks… I’m obsessed. I’m not exactly sure why, but you can bet that I will find me a clock to add to the new patio.
7. A tray is essential to add function and fashion to any living space. This one is adorable, but I hope to find (or DIY) one that can add a bit of meaningful personality to our new space!
8. HDC does it again with this calming, geometric pillow. I love that this pillow complements the furniture, while also adding a pop of pattern. You can definitely expect lots of pillows on our patio.
9. Italian Lights will be a must, but may not be added until next year. We plan to build a pergola and dress that baby up with strands of these fabulous lights.
So here ya have it, the break down of my patio inspiration! I’m so excited to kick off my landscaping/patio series by partnering up with Home Decorators Collection! HDC is spot on with my patio vision, but has far more than just outdoor essentials to choose from. You can check out their outdoor line at your local HomeDepot, or peek at everything else amazing on their site
Stay tuned as we take you on our crazy journey of remodeling our backyard to create an extension of our little lodge.  In the meantime, bring on the dirt…

Ideas for Master Bedroom Makeover

The master bedroom.

To me it should be a place to relax after a long day. A place to put your feet up and kick back. A calm, tranquil spot that is your own space away from the rest of the world.

Well…I‘m not sure if our master bedroom has hit everything on that checklist.

Okay, it isn’t terrible. But, it just doesn’t scream “Mike & Casey”. It doesn’t give me the relaxing, calm feeling I’m trying to attain.

Instead it is a little dark and a little too green.

We purchased the flowery green/white/black comforter long before I really cared for home decor. I figured the colors were masculine enough to make the man of the house happy. The comforter is comfy, but I’ve never really looooved it.

The entire room has been fine. Just fine, for all of these years.

But, I want our room to be better than fine. That’s why we are slowly but surely changing up our master bedroom.

The canvas quote that I showed you guys on Tuesday is one of the first pieces of the room puzzle that I have figured out. I’m really loving that little nook in our room with the muted tones of green, white, and gray.

But I’m clueless when it comes to the rest of the room. So I decided to put a mood board together to get the ideas flowing for this mini-makeover.

If I could start on this entire room from scratch, I’m not sure if I would go with the green, black, white, gray color combo. But, we’re working on limited funds here people. So I’m going to try and keep the color scheme similar, just more subdued.

1. Like I said, I’m going to keep many of the core elements of the room the same. So that means the current black night stands, white table lamp, and greenery will all still be a part of the room. Maybe I’ll spruce them up a bit though??

2. I’m obsessed with this headboard and bed frame. It hits everything on my checklist. Upholstered (Check!), Nailhead Trim (Check!) Buttons (Check!)  Wingback (Check!) I could attempt to DIY a similar version...but I don’t think I could attain the same high-end look that this bad boy has going on. For now, I’ll just save my pennies and hopefully purchase it someday…

3. I’m all about neutrals with a pop of pattern and color. I think this bed setup does just that. I’m looking for a high-quality comfy duvet cover in crisp white, and then I can jazz it up with pillows. Finding bedding & pillows similar to this, is #1 on my bedroom to-do list.

4. This striped rug has just the right amount of “preppy-ness” going on and I like the soft green color.

5. I’ve always wanted to create a reading nook in our bedroom, and for that it is all about finding the right chair. This gray one is gorgeous & glamorous. I could definitely picture myself curled up in the green blanket, sitting on this chair, reading a novel.

Let me know if you have any suggestions for us as we slowly (but surely!) transform this space into something we both love. Happy weekend!!

My fiancé and I just purchased the beautiful “Cotton Pintuck Duvet” in white from West Elm. I love that its crisp and white but still a little feminine (Shh don’t tell him that). I also love the idea that you can change up the entire color scheme of the room just by switching up the pillows occasionally!

    Amy,
What a great purchase! I love West Elm’s bedding…such great quality and totally on trend. And you’re totally right, neutrals offer so much flexibility! Plus it gives me the chance to buy more pillows (my guy is always like “more pillows?! We already have too many!”)
