My First Grilling Lesson

Last week we introduced you to our new amazing grills. They’re pretty darn cool, but we’re also both very intimidated by them. I’ve never grilled a day in my life and mixing my newbie grilling skills together with a dangerous propane tank…made the task of “breaking in” our new toy, a very scary one!

Lucky for me, Finn is a master griller and he was willing to show me the ropes. But before we fired up our new grill…he informed me that we needed the right accessories. We whipped out our laptops, and purchased a grill cover, tongs, a grill brush, and a giant spatula all online. Not to mention my favorite purchase…a grilling basket (more on that in a bit…)

Since it is wintertime, we knew we needed a cover to keep our grill safe in the harsh conditions. This giant black cover protects our new balcony addition, so we can keep it looking good for years to come.

Once we received all of the grillin’ goods, it was time to get to work with my first “lesson.” Finn decided to keep it simple for us with grilled veggies, chicken, and steak. A nice basic meal that would be tasty, and hopefully foolproof.

We chopped up the peppers and onions, and then coated them in a bit of olive oil, salt, and pepper. Finn marinated the meat and before I knew it, we were all ready to bundle up and head outside.  The whole propane tank thing totally freaked me out at first. But my handsome teacher showed me how to open the valve and light the grill. I had no idea how simple it was…it’s just like using a stove top. So far, I was off to a good (& safe) start…

Our Kenmore grill was hot in no time, and we threw on our meal and got to work. See that amazing metal basket above? That is quite possibly the best grill accessory ever! My mom always uses one when she grills vegetables, and we knew we needed to get one immediately.

It’s great because you can grill smaller things (like chopped veggies) and you don’t have to worry about anything falling through the cracks of the grill. Just be careful and use tongs when you’re moving it around on the grill because the metal basket gets really hot!

Here’s my teacher taking over for a few minutes, while I snapped away. Notice the earmuffs and gator to keep warm. I think it was about 12 degrees outside at this point (This article gave us a few tips about wintertime grilling!). We kept running inside to warm up while our food cooked, so it made for an interesting grilling lesson. But, I do think I learned all of the basics.

So do I feel like a grilling master? Definitely not. But I must say I’m not quite as intimidated by this big metal box.  And I still have plenty of time to practice before grilling season officially begins. Who’s coming over for dinner?

Grillin’ Gals

Grilling just screams summertime…doesn’t it? Having a cocktail on the patio, throwing a few burgers on the grill, and hanging with friends….that sounds like a fabulous summer day to us! Unfortunately it’s the dead of winter, and those sunshine filled days are a looong ways away!
But who says you can’t fire up the grill in January? Grilled food just tastes better and it’s worth it to freeze your tush for a few minutes, in exchange for yummy food.
Since Casey recently acquired a balcony (big enough for a grill) and Bridget recently built a patio (totally big enough for a grill)…these 2 rookies decided to take the plunge and find 2 fabulous BBQs to complete our outdoor spaces. We figure that gives us a few months to practice our grillin’ technique, and by the time summer comes along we will officially be grillmasters! #wishfulthinking
Bridget: Here’s my tricked out grill. Isn’t this bad boy insanely huge & awesome? There are so many “secret” features that make this grill seem like the celebrity of all grills.
In true celebrity fashion, this paparazzo tried to capture all of the details that make up this Kenmore Grill model. Take this side burner for example. #genius
The grill itself is very large, yet the side burner is the perfect addition to grill something that may not want to mix with the other food. If a whole bunch of big ol’ steaks are taking up the entire grill surface, you still have the top shelf for additional grilling space, and you can sauté some asparagus in the side burner, making sure cross contamination is not.a.problem.
This thermometer is a great addition the the top of the hood. Not only does it make this grill look very “official” it is also the perfect tool to make sure your grill is the right temperature before throwing on your grub, or in some cases, taking it off to serve to your guests.
Possibly one of my favorite parts of the celebrity status grill is the side of the grill that pulls out & doubles as prep table with ONE easy step. This fold out table is genius and beyondddd functional. You can set your pre-cooked meats here, lay your tools out, or mix your “rubs” here before slapping them on the meal. I love that you don’t have to clutter a nearby patio table to do your pre-grill prep, which eliminates the risk of cross contaminating this social space with raw meats or accidental meat juice (too graphic? My apologies to any vegetarians tuning in). When you’re done cookin’, all you have to do is sanitize this prep table and fold it back down. How amazing it that?!

But enough mushing & gushing about the new addition to Bridget’s patio, here’s a peek at Casey’s grill.

Casey: Here’s my fiery red grill from Sears that is fabulous for city grilling (you see the skyline right out there?) This bad boy adds a pop of color to our balcony area, and it fits perfectly in our corner nook.

We don’t have a ton of room out there, but there is still plenty of space for our table, 2 chairs, and the grill. Heck yes baby! I always thought that “city people” could only have a baby sized grill (ya know the ones that people use at tailgates that fit about 2.5 hamburgers?)…but boy was I wrong!side burner
Our Kenmore grill is plenty big and like Bridget’s, it even has a small prep table and side burner. It’s a tad intimidating for me…but it’s the best “toy” my husband-to-be could have ever received. He’s been itching to freeze outside and fire that thing up. But for now he needs to move aside, as I learn how to work this thing!
So these are our two new “home accessories” and you better believe that we will be blogging about our adventures in grilling. Next week, Casey & Finn will tackle a homemade recipe on their city grill. Then stay tuned for the newlyweds to christen theirs. We’re all hoping that these amazing grills do most of the work for us, because if it was just left to our cooking skills…we may not have many edible dinners in our future.  We’ll also be hitting up this website for plenty of grilling tips, tricks, and recipes, because we need all the help we can get. #grillingnewbies
