The new wallpaper in the basement

On Monday, I shared the entire process of installing the wallpaper in our basement. Wow, it’s stunning and adds so much color and life to this space. Today, I want to discuss our new basement furniture and why I chose these exact pieces for this space. Oh, and get ready for some crazy before and after pictures (my favorite part!) because this room truly has come a long way in a short amount of time.

Choosing Castlery…Again!

the real costs of home renovations

If you remember this blog post about our breakfast nook, we chose furniture from Castlery to complete our dining space. Castlery is a direct-to-consumer brand, which means their prices are more affordable than other furniture stores, with flat-rate shipping too. We adore our dining pieces and they’ve held up really well with two kids.

Choosing basement furniture

It was a no-brainer to partner with them again to furnish our basement…another kid-friendly space.

The Long Sofa

The Jonathan extended sofa from Castlery..our new basement furniture

The most important piece down here is the sofa. I knew I wanted it to be super comfy, large enough for us to all sit on together, and low-maintenance when it came to the fabric.

This is the Jonathan extended sofa in the color “dark granite.” Guys, this baby is big! It’s 124 inches long and 39 inches deep.

The four of us can easily sit on this at the same time for movie nights.

I chose this piece because it’s low to the ground. This works well with our short ceilings here in the basement, while also making it easy for our kids to get up and down on their own.

Our upstairs couch is a high-performance fabric in a light color and I’m always very worried about spills and dirt. That’s why I chose a darker color down here. Castlery offers free fabric swatches to see in your space before you buy too. I didn’t want to have to police the kids with their drinks and snacks on this sofa. Instead, they can just have at it and if anything happens, it’s an easy cleanup!

The Kid-Friendly Ottoman

To add a bit of warmth to the room, I chose this leather ottoman from Castlery. It’s also a part of the “Jonathan” collection, so it works well with the sofa. This is in the color “caramel” and it’s the most gorgeous brown hue. This is another family-friendly piece that acts as both a coffee table and a footrest.

Do I typically display a basket with a breakable vase and candle on my beautiful ottoman? No, no, I don’t. But it certainly looks good in these photos and shows that you can use these cozy ottomans as true coffee tables!

The TV Stand

The Harper TV stand from Castlery

Finally, let’s discuss the Harper TV stand. It is a showstopper! It gives off mid-century vibes and, just like the ottoman, it adds warmth to the room. It has a walnut finish with sleek black legs and brass hardware.

I also really love the slat wood on the main portion of the TV stand that mimics the vertical shiplap on the wall. Overall, it’s a stunning piece of furniture.

Hiding toys in the TV stand in the basement

The coolest part is how this TV stand opens. The two cabinets slide open and the sides roll into the back of the piece. It’s really an awesome feature! Inside, there is one shelf, so we’ve been storing slim toys in here for the kids to have easy access. They can grab what they need and then at the end of the day, we slide these doors closed!

The Basement Transformation

Okay, let’s take a look at how far this space has come since the summertime…

Isn’t it bonkers? The basement flood was not my favorite moment of 2022, but we wouldn’t have this amazing basement if it didn’t happen. I’m grateful we made it through that and we now have a nice (brand new!) space for our entire family to enjoy.

What’s Next?

Our new basement furniture from Castlery

Now that we finally have basement furniture and a designated hangout spot, I will focus my attention on the other parts of this basement. I’m waiting on a bench cushion to arrive for the window area and we’re slowly figuring out how we want the playroom area to function for the kids. Oh, and Finn has officially been kicked out of my office and is setting up shop down here with his own office space. Those two spots will be a work in progress over the coming months.

As for DIY, the next big project will be the bathroom. Right now, it’s functional, but not pretty. I’ll be re-tiling and replacing the vanity and toilet in there all by myself (gulp) and that will likely kick off next month!
