Last week we introduced you to our new amazing grills. They’re pretty darn cool, but we’re also both very intimidated by them. I’ve never grilled a day in my life and mixing my newbie grilling skills together with a dangerous propane tank…made the task of “breaking in” our new toy, a very scary one!
Lucky for me, Finn is a master griller and he was willing to show me the ropes. But before we fired up our new grill…he informed me that we needed the right accessories. We whipped out our laptops, and purchased a grill cover, tongs, a grill brush, and a giant spatula all online. Not to mention my favorite purchase…a grilling basket (more on that in a bit…)
Since it is wintertime, we knew we needed a cover to keep our grill safe in the harsh conditions. This giant black cover protects our new balcony addition, so we can keep it looking good for years to come.
Once we received all of the grillin’ goods, it was time to get to work with my first “lesson.” Finn decided to keep it simple for us with grilled veggies, chicken, and steak. A nice basic meal that would be tasty, and hopefully foolproof.
We chopped up the peppers and onions, and then coated them in a bit of olive oil, salt, and pepper. Finn marinated the meat and before I knew it, we were all ready to bundle up and head outside. The whole propane tank thing totally freaked me out at first. But my handsome teacher showed me how to open the valve and light the grill. I had no idea how simple it was…it’s just like using a stove top. So far, I was off to a good (& safe) start…
Our Kenmore grill was hot in no time, and we threw on our meal and got to work. See that amazing metal basket above? That is quite possibly the best grill accessory ever! My mom always uses one when she grills vegetables, and we knew we needed to get one immediately.
It’s great because you can grill smaller things (like chopped veggies) and you don’t have to worry about anything falling through the cracks of the grill. Just be careful and use tongs when you’re moving it around on the grill because the metal basket gets really hot!
Here’s my teacher taking over for a few minutes, while I snapped away. Notice the earmuffs and gator to keep warm. I think it was about 12 degrees outside at this point (This article gave us a few tips about wintertime grilling!). We kept running inside to warm up while our food cooked, so it made for an interesting grilling lesson. But, I do think I learned all of the basics.
So do I feel like a grilling master? Definitely not. But I must say I’m not quite as intimidated by this big metal box. And I still have plenty of time to practice before grilling season officially begins. Who’s coming over for dinner?
