I’ve read home & DIY blogs for years now….long before I ever became a blogger myself. And I’ve always loved reading other blogs because I’m constantly introduced to new products & items for my home that I wouldn’t have known about otherwise.

So when working on the finishing touches of our guest room, I knew that I really wanted a new mattress for the space. Specifically because the one we have is so incredibly old (honestly, I’m embarrassed to admit that I don’t even know how old it is…), and I was putting this new gorgeous bedding on a gross, old mattress. Having read about the new “mattress in a box” trend on a few of my favorite blogs, I decided to do a bit of research on the subject.

After looking into a few companies, I was sold! No heading to a mattress store to have an awkward chat with a mattress salesman. Instead, I would order my mattress online and have it shipped (in a box!) to my front door and I wouldn’t have to take a day off work waiting for a mattress delivery man!

Gel Foam Bed Mattress Review

I decided on the company GelFoamBed specifically because their prices were great, all of their products are made in America, and they have a 100 night risk free trial.

They have a wide variety of mattresses to choose from that vary in their “plushness.” I decided to go with one of their bestsellers…the 12″ Miranda Medium Plush Gel Memory Mattress. Shortly after ordering, it showed up at our doorstep in a big ol’ box. I could barely believe that my new mattress was inside this thing!

Okay, so we had a new mattress…but what about our old mattress?

See I told you it was old! We had to get rid of this bad boy, and since it had seen better days we weren’t able to donate it to a local charity (they often won’t take mattresses with any rips and ours had a couple in it). After more research, I came upon the company Mattress Disposal Plus who will take your old mattress away for a fee and recycle it! In full disclosure, their customer service wasn’t the best…but they did eventually (after a few too many calls…) take our mattress away for $79. It was a small price to pay, considering Finn & I were sooooo eager to get this thing out of our sight for good.

Okay, so our old one was gone…now time to open up the new one! Here it is all rolled up. Following the instructions, I pulled it out of the box and put it on the bed frame. After carefully tearing away the plastic, it opened up and fully expanded. I could hardly believe how big it got in a matter of minutes! I am definitely a mattress newbie, having never actually purchased one as an adult, and only using hand-me-downs from family members over the years. But wow…this is how a bed is supposed to feel! It is a sink-in-take-a-nap kinda comfortable!We’ve always used a mattress pad on our mattresses, but there is absolutely no need for one on this. It’s so plush, and after reading more about it I learned that the memory foam layer also creates a cooler sleep surface. Who knew mattresses had so many awesome features these days?!

After a few jumps on the new bed, I finally put the bedding on top and got our guest room back together.

Moving the Mattress to the Master

When Finn got home from work that day, he immediately tried out the new mattress and declared that we must move it to our master bedroom. Which makes sense….why wouldn’t we put the new mattress in there where we could enjoy it every.single.night?! Duh.

So our new mattress found its final resting spot in our master bedroom. Sorry to our future guests. But hey, at least they don’t have to sleep on the ancient-stiff-as-a-board mattress we disposed of!
