Dining Room Bar Stool Options

Guys…I have had so.much.fun sharing our “dining room” shopping decisions with you all along the way. You’ve helped so much when it came to figuring out which table and chairs to go with for our kitchen/dining space, and I seriously loved reading your input as we finalized our decor decisions. It’s like I have a trusty little team of shoppers right along with me as I make these purchases….love that!

dining-room-tableLast we chatted, I had chosen a dining room table (this marble one from Crate & Barrel) and I showed you all of our dining room chair options.

dining-roomWe ended up going with 2 of these gray upholstered chairs from West Elm, and 4 of these white chairs from Overstock. I almost purchased these white CB2 ones, but they were out of stock and were double the price of the Overstock ones. Plus, they had some great online reviews…which I’m always a sucker for. So ultimately those babies won out.

white-chairI was super nervous that it wouldn’t all work together. White, marble, gray upholstered, all with varying back heights? Would this be too busy?! But once the chairs came, I was really happy with our choices.

gray-west-elm-dining-chairgray-chairThe gray chairs are sooooo comfortable. Seriously, like you’re sitting on a cloud. We love them.

white-chair-diningThe white ones are surprisingly really nice and modern too. I was worried because they were so inexpensive, but they’re actually made well and are super comfortable. I like that I can replace these if needed since they didn’t cost nearly as much as the upholstered ones. Plus, the white really brightens up the space.

kitchen-dining-room-tableNow that the table is finalized, it’s time to move onto the bar stools. We’ve had these Ikea ones for about 3 years now and they’ve served us well. However, they’re just way too dark for the space and they really blend into the wood kitchen island. I’ve been anxious to get rid of them since we moved in, but ultimately wanted to figure out the table situation first. They’ll soon be making their way to a Craigslist near you 😉

Here’s the kind of bar stool we’re looking to purchase…

Bar Stool Must-Haves

  • Must be counter height (typically around 24 inches)
  • Probably do 2 stools…3 might be too much
  • Preferably white (I considered gray…but our next big purchase will probably be a gray couch, and I think that will just be gray overkill)
  • Easy to maintain (i.e. wipeable and not upholstered)
  • Must have a back (Finn’s only must-have for this round)

Armed with my trusty list, I started scouring the internet looking for white bar stools with stellar reviews.bar_stool_inspiration.13 PM

White Mesh // Modern & Silver // White Weave // White Padded

While I feel like they’re all great options, I really like the mesh one from Blu Dot. I’ve loved those chairs ever since I saw them in black in Wit & Delight’s kitchen.wit-delight-counter-stool

They’re fun, not too trendy, and look like they can take some wear and tear. So if I’m being perfectly honest…I’m leaning towards 2 of those! They look a bit off-white online, but in the reviews someone said they’re definitely bright white. So that put me at ease…

dining-room-table-augustaNow, the big question…once I decide on the bar stools, will these purchases finally be complete?! Or do you guys think I need a rug under the table? I’m worried it will feel a bit cramped and crowded, but honestly I don’t know. Again, would love your input!

  • Maggie L.

I think your choice is spot on! I love those! I may be in the minority on this one but rugs under dining tables just aren’t my jive. Something about eating over fabric grosses me out lol! Or could be I am just to lazy to pull everything off to vacuum. They look beautiful but just are practical, in my opinion 🙂

    • Thanks so much Maggie! And I can see your point on the rugs…haha too funny. Might be hard for cleanup!

  • H Buchanan

I originally thought you wanted a vote on the chairs and I was picking out chair 2 before I even read that was the direction you were leaning! It is a great looking chair. As for the rug, I feel like it might be too busy (based on the pictures). Depending on the size, it seems like it would butt up against your living room rug. I think two rugs so close together would feel crowded.

    • Yeah I’m starting to think no rug is the right choice! You’re right….with 2 rugs it may be wayyyyy too much!

  • Abbie DeLaney Zinkan

My favorite stools are 2 and 4, I think either would be great in that space. I’m with the other comments, I think a rug may be a bit too much in that space. Just my thoughts and the chairs look great!

  • I like the mesh ones too! They feel like a great marriage of the shape of your gray dining chairs & the color of the white ones!

hey girl great choices! So pretty!

  • Erin

at first i was like the mesh chair? then i looked at it closely and decided yeah that’s probably your best choice, as it’s gonna keep the area light. i almost wish your cabinets were white or even a light gray to lighten up the kitchen area. but i think once you add the white chairs and get rid of those black stools, it’ll be much much better!

as for the rug. trust me on this, no go!!!! it’ll make it feel cramped. and it’ll be annoying because you’ll want a size that’s big so you can slide the chairs back n forth. and if you get a smaller size, it’ll just drive you nuts.

    • You and me both on the gray/white cabinets. That would be awesome wouldn’t it?! I figured I have to do white to really brighten up that side of the room.

And I think you guys convinced me on the no rug situation. Great insight!

  • So happy to hear you were inspired to replace yours! How exciting!

  • T. Naomi McBurney

Rugs under dining table are a no no for me….I can’t help but picture food and drinks being spilled on it and then the extra time, effort and money to clean it. I like the styles you picked and I can see why you want to go light. I like #1 and #4.

    • Thanks for the feedback, I’ve never thought about a rug under the dining table! Thank you!! =)

  • Kara D

I would definitely go with a #1 as well. Personally I have always been in love with #2 for years, but that would be introducing another “color” in the area, which I think would be too much with the chair combos you’ve got going on. Keeping them all in one color would make it look more harmonious. Plus the “holes” in the mesh allows for it to be not as visually heavy in the area, like #3 or #4 would do, if that makes sense?

    • Yes! Totally makes sense. Love the use of the word harmonious….that explains it perfectly!!!
