White + Blush Family Room Reveal

Last we chatted about my mom’s condo, I told you guys how I wanted to move right in because it is just so stunning. Well, after seeing this next space made over I want to pack my bag and get my butt on over to her place. Is it weird if a married 30-year-old moves back in with her mom? Wait, maybe don’t answer that.

Her entire place really is just so gorgeous. But before we get to the goods on today’s blush family room reveal, let’s make sure you haven’t missed any other rooms in her city space.

White & Blush Family Room

Come take a look at this blush family room makeover. A truly stunning before and after

Now that you’re all caught up, here’s Jan’s latest room makeover…

I’m in love. She’s in love. Hell, the whole family is happy with this space!

Custom White Built-Ins

These white built-ins in this blush family room have lots of storage and room for accessories

First, let’s talk about one of the biggest changes to the room…this custom white built-in entertainment unit. After searching for a carpenter for months, my mom finally found someone willing to take on this big job.

How to accessorize shelves

And if I had to do my built-ins over again, I would definitely go with this configuration. I like the size of the rectangular cubes on the sides and the big ones up top for displaying taller items. Plus, he even installed lighting in the top cubbies! Swanky.

Home decor tips to decorate built-in shelves

Jan and I had so much fun styling these beauties. We used all of the tips from this post and did our best to find neutral items that were personal to her. When my mom moved to the city, she got rid of a lot of her belongings…including tons of books. When I came over to start styling these shelves, she could barely muster up any books at all for us to display.

Frame an old family photograph in a brass frame.

So we trekked to the local thrift store and purchased as many hardcover books as we could find. $30 later and we had TONS of books to style these shelves.

Add baskets to bookshelves for extra storage.

My favorite item on the shelf is this gold frame with a photo of my grandmother (my mom’s mom). I love adding old school pictures like this throughout homes to tell the story of the person who lives there. So sweet and dang, my grandma looks good! Go Meme!

Layer in books, greenery, and picture frames to create the perfect shelfie.

Up top, we have baskets for more storage and a few fun knick knacks.

We also added lots of greenery throughout for color (some are faux, some are real), and even some stylish boxes for more secret storage!

The built-ins are the center of this large room and they were well worth the wait! Love them.

Fireplace Makeover

Marble fireplace makeover with white shiplap
White marble subway tile around a fireplace

My mom also had her carpenter go to work on this fireplace area. Before, it had beige tiles around the fireplace and all the way up the wall. Kinda the same ugly tile from my guest bathroom. Not the cutest for this light & bright space.

Love this large round industrial clock against this white shiplap background

She had the tile ripped out and replaced the bottom portion with marble subway tile. It kinda reminds me of Bridget’s fireplace look. So classy and elegant.

Jan then had him build a white mantle and shiplap all the way up to the ceiling. She had this amazing vision in her head and he really brought it to life for her. The clock was a gift from all of us for her recent graduation.

Industrial black clock

Side Note: Guys…my mom just got her master’s degree from Loyola!! Isn’t that amazing? We are so proud of all of her hard work. We all ended up getting her this clock to remind her of all of her time spent studying. Ha!

Black picture frames from Pottery Barn with thick white mats.

The clock is well-made and the black really pops against the white shiplap. Plus, I love that it doesn’t cover up the nice craftsmanship of the woodworking.

On her new mantle, my mom used these classic frames to display pictures of all of us. Whenever one of us takes a new “good” picture, she is always swapping these out so they’re up-to-date and we’re happy with them. So sweet of her.

A Large Gray Rug

This blush family room is open and inviting!

Because this room is huge and opens up to the dining and kitchen areas, we knew we needed a large rug to ground the space. But big rugs are expensive, so it isn’t always an easy task to find an affordable one that works.

This one works! My mom was so happy to find it (it’s a 10 x 13) and it really is plush on your feet. The grandkids have been over and play on it all the time. If it’s grandkid approved, you know it’s good. Plus, that price point can’t be beat.

Coffee, Side & Console Tables

A wood console table provides storage and it hides the back of the couch.

This main room is so large, that we even had room behind the couch for a console table. I love it when people do console tables like this behind their couches because instead of looking at the back of the couch…you have a pretty area to style. The farmhouse vibes of this piece work well with these stools that we added to her kitchen. Love the light wood on both of those pieces.

A wooden bowl showcases loose pictures and polaroids and works as cute tabletop decor

On top, we kept the styling simple. This large canister was actually one we used at my wedding for our cookie & milkshake bar (I’m not a big cake person, so we did cookies instead!). Jan filled this wedding memento with sand and seashells from some of her trips.

Love this round and gold coffee table with a large sectional

I found this cool wooden bowl from HomeGoods and we added some loose pictures to it. Polaroid pics would work well in here too, because it’s a nice little vessel to hold items for guests to sort through.

These white club chairs are comfortable and stylish

We found this round gold coffee table at a local shop here in Chicago and immediately scooped it up. The store is called Painted Lady and we actually found the popular art piece that hangs above my mom’s bed there too, along with the console table behind the couch. The brass table adds some warmth to this neutral space and I love the round lines paired with the sofa.

Finally, we have another wood piece between these two armchairs. I’m telling ya, if a room ever starts to feel cold…add a hint of wood here and there to add some texture and warmth to the space! This little side table was a steal and it fits there perfectly.

The Seating

The harper sectional from Interior Define
A white club chair that is comfortable and sleek

Let’s chat about this sectional for a bit. You guys know both B and I love Interior Define and we’ve both purchased the Sloan style sofas for our own homes. But, I’m so happy my mom went with a different style and color! This is the “Harper” in the color “linen.” I love the low profile, the high arms, and the cozy backing. It’s a great addition to her family room space, especially with the blush pillows and throws on there. (Note: Jan is following all of our rules for displaying throw blankets. Good work, girl).

Additional seating is always a good idea for someone who likes to entertain, and Jan had room for these beautiful armchairs. We went with these chairs in the fabric “Ronan Linen.” They do have a lot of various fabrics, colors, and woods to choose from, so if you like the shape of these check them out.

Before & After

But before we go, let’s take a look at some of the before and after photos. The before pictures are from the original MLS listing…

Pretty spectacular, right?!

The only thing we didn’t do in the space is swap the overhead light fixture in the center of the room. It isn’t terrible, but it does hang down a little too low for my taste. Jan and I are eyeing this one, but are waiting for a sale to take the plunge!
