New Ceiling Fans In The Bedrooms

[Disclaimer: This post is sponsored by Emerson Fans. Thanks for supporting the brands that support The DIY Playbook.]

I feel like there are two kinds of sleepers. One sleeper needs a dark and cold room and a fan on (no matter how cold it is outside). The other can sleep in just about any room situation. I’m definitely the former. I need blackout shades on my windows (these are the ones we have),  I have my sound machine turned all the way up, and the room needs to be cold with the ceiling fan on. Am I a diva sleeper? Perhaps. But I get a good eight to nine hours every single night!

Bedroom Ceiling Fans…A Must for Us!

It should be no surprise that we decided to go with ceiling fans in the bedrooms of our house. While I love the look of a cool light fixture in a bedroom, I need the soft air blowing on me when I’m sleeping. Luckily, I was able to find bedroom ceiling fans for our new house that are both stylish and functional. It’s seriously the best of both worlds!

Guest Bedroom – Black & GoldBedroom ceiling fans

I received soooooo many questions about this ceiling fan as I shared progress during our Finn Fixer Upper. And for good reason…it’s absolutely gorgeous. Because this room is pretty small, I needed to go with a smaller fan that wouldn’t overpower the room. I ended up going with the Astor ceiling fan from Emerson in barbeque black and satin gold. The blades span 52″ across, so it’s not too small and not too big for the space. I also like that the downrod is only 4.5 inches long so it’s fairly close to the ceiling (which is what we needed in this room). Black and gold ceiling fan

It’s contemporary and sleek and those colors are perfection against the “Tarrytown Green” walls. For now, I just have our old furniture and decor in this room, but when I do eventually decorate, I plan to incorporate more gold to match the pretty color on the bedroom ceiling fan.

This fan comes with a remote control that I keep in the nightstand. It is so cool that our guests can lie in bed and turn off the lights or adjust the speed on the fan. A few of you wanted to see what it looks like with the light on. It’s a dimmable LED so it doesn’t emit any heat, but instead gives off the perfect glow! Our guest bedroom

The guest bedroom will eventually get some attention, but right now, it’s looking very stark white against the dark walls. Plus, I’m in desperate need of an area rug in here. But at least it’s a cozy spot if we have any guests come to sleep in here!Guest bedroom beforeGuest bedroom before and after

And let’s not forget how far we’ve come! How about that ceiling fan in the before photo? Lots of brass going on (and not the good kind!).

Master Bedroom – Sleek Black WoodMaster bedroom ceiling fan

The ceilings in our master bedroom are higher and we have a coffered ceiling in here, plus, it’s a really large room. Because of those features, I wanted to go with a larger, and grander, ceiling fan in this room. Bedroom ceiling fans from emerson

I ended up choosing the Lindbergh ceiling fan from Emerson with a graphite rod and charcoal wood blades. Because this room is larger, I went with the 60″ blade span and the six-inch downrod. Black wood ceiling fan

When our electrician installed this fan, I was immediately smitten. It has wood blades that are stained black and you can see the wood grain through it. You can tell it’s a quality piece and this fan is very well-made. It also comes in a gorgeous light wood color that I would have done if it wasn’t too matchy-match with our hardwood floors. Finn and I use this bad boy every single night! It makes a gentle whirring noise and keeps me cool all night long. I love that soft breeze when I am  sleeping and this fan gets the job done. Black bedroom ceiling fans

I’m happy I went with the black color because even when we eventually change out the furniture and decor in this space, the black ceiling fan will still work! I always say that every room should have a little bit of black and this ceiling fan is the perfect addition of that classic color.Master bedroom beforeThe lindbergh ceiling fan from emerson

You can see such a big difference from that before photo (wow, remember that green ceiling?!). Apparently, the old owners were fan sleepers too, but it seems that’s about all we had in common in terms of home style. Ha!

Change Your Ceiling Fan DirectionBlack ceiling fan from Emerson

Did you know that you’re supposed to change the direction of your ceiling fan, depending on the time of the year?! Yep. This is something I’ve forgotten in the past, but I put a reminder on my calendar to change the direction of the fan blades, come winter. Ceiling blades should go counterclockwise in the summer to cool down a space

  • Summer = Counter-clockwise (high speed)
  • Winter = Clockwise (low speed)

In the warmer months, you want the fan to blow air straight down on you. So it should run counter-clockwise. During the winter, your fan should run in a clockwise direction (and at a lower speed). This pulls cool air up and pushes warm air down. It’s a great way to save a bit on your energy bill!

You’ll usually find a switch directly on the body of the ceiling fan to change the direction of the blades, or on some, you can change with a remote control or the wall switch.
