Our Main Bedroom Makeover Reveal

It’s been three months since I first chatted about my design plan for our main bedroom makeover. When we began, the space was fine. Just fine. But it really didn’t feel like us and it was devoid of the personality and life that I love so much in the rest of our home. I was determined to create a calming oasis where we could retreat at the end of a long day and recharge. And I’m happy to say I think we accomplished just that! Figuring out a main bedroom design plan

But before we get to the after pictures, let’s rewind and chat about all of the hard work that has gone into this space over the past few months.

The Design Plan

In the first blog post of the series, I walked through the before photos of the space, along with my pain points. Even though it’s a big room, I hated how one side felt super empty while the other felt crammed with furniture. The above mood board showcases my original design plan for our main bedroom and I pretty much stuck to it, minus those nightstands. I always like having some sort of vision when embarking on a project because it helps keep me in line as I make decisions.

Wallpaper…on the Ceiling!How to wallpaper a ceiling

My favorite part of this room was wallpapering the ceiling with Erin from Relativity Textiles. While I’ve wallpapered walls before, a ceiling was an entirely different ballgame. Thank goodness Erin was there to guide me and Finn along the way. It was a long day, but so freakin’ fun. And it turned out incredible – and my back and neck have since recovered!

Painting The Walls Blue/GrayPainting our bedroom gray blue

The wallpaper really steered the direction of this entire project. With that gorgeous pattern up, I was able to find a blue/gray color to match the walls and the ceiling. It took me an entire day, but I got it all done with Benjamin Moore “Boothbay Gray” everywhere. You can read more about why I chose different sheens for the ceiling versus the walls in this blog post, along with lots of painting tips.

Finding a New MattressMy new california king-sized mattress

While a big goal of this main bedroom makeover was to inject more color and life into this room, we also wanted to upgrade the size of our bed from a queen to a king. I’ve been begging Finn for years to get a bigger bed and he finally caved. But with a bigger bed comes a need for a new bed frame, new mattress, new bedding, etc. In this blog post, I dive into the details about our new mattress and why it was important for us to go with a local business that’s all about sustainability. Oh, and if you’re wondering, we still adore this mattress. We’re both sleeping so well and it’s incredibly comfortable.

Brass Curtain Rods on the CheapUsing rub 'n buff on black curtain hardware

With the main furniture arriving, I was able to think about the other components of this room…the accessories. I ended up giving the product Rub ‘n Buff a try to make my black curtain rods look like brass. And it actually worked! I bought one tiny tube and I still have so much leftover. I can’t get over how well this product works to make just about anything gold or brass. It hasn’t rubbed off at all and the color works so well with the other gold accessories in here.

Adding SconcesOur new bedroom sconces next to our bed

I knew, from the start, that we were gonna go with sconces in here because I think they make any bedroom feel more high-end. Plus they free up lots of nightstand space. I share my rules for lighting, tips on hanging, and other sconces I considered in this blog post.

Installing our Frame TVHow to install the Frame TV

Finally, I highlighted the latest addition to our main bedroom space – our new Frame TV. It was a bit of a head scratcher to figure out how the heck to hide the wires and the power box to this television, but we got it done. You can read all about that saga in this blog post.

Main Bedroom Makeover – Before & After

Okay, we’re officially all caught up. Let’s take a look at the before and after of this space. I’m gonna take it waaaay back to May 2019, when we first bought our home. As you’ll see, we had a mint green ceiling, carpeted floors, and lots of wood trim everywhere… Master bedroom beforeOur main bedroom beforeOur main bedroom makeoverMaster Bedroom Closet Before

My Overall Thoughts

Our new bedroom retreat

This room used to just be kinda “blah” to me. It was a fine place to sleep, but I never felt inspired walking into this room. Now, I actually want to spend time here! I put Rory to bed, get my jammies on, and then sit in bed and read, catch up on work, or watch a favorite show. With the lamps on, it’s just so cozy in here at night, which you can see in my recent home tour at night post. Our main bedroom makeover reveal

The nightstands were the final touch for this room. Even though I adored my old campaign-style nightstands, they were just too bulky for the space. I was able to sell them locally and put that money towards buying new ones. These are vintage nightstands from Megmade and I had them painted a gloss black. Brass detailing on the nightstands

The detailing on the hardware is exquisite. They just don’t make furniture like they used to. I was a tad nervous about going with black in here, but I adore the end result. Our vintage black nightstandsHandpainted tray by my great grandmotherOur black nightstands It ties together the black ceiling fan, black table lamp, and the other dark accents in the room. Adding a dresser to the other side of the room

I’m also incredibly pleased that we changed up the layout here. As I mentioned, I hated how everything felt like it was jammed on one side of the room. Just for fun, I tried out the dresser underneath the windows and said we would live with it like that for a few days to test out. Whoa, it was a gamechanger. It just felt right. This is now the view you see when you enter our bedroom and it’s so pretty.Decorating the top of our bedroom dresser

Overall, I couldn’t be happier with how this bedroom came together. It wasn’t the fastest room makeover I’ve ever done, but every choice was very intentional and the end result was just what I envisioned.
