Last week, we introduced you to the kids’ room we are working on in the coming weeks. This room has major potential and we are thrilled to get started! Here’s a before picture of the kids’ room to jog your memory…

Our Process for a New Space

When redesigning a space, we always like to spend some time in the room and really look around and visualize what we can change in here. We then get to work creating a to-do list of what needs to be done first (like painting), what items we need to buy, and what will be staying in the room. This room is for 4 grandkids who sleepover and visit often, so we knew we needed to keep the bunk beds. Other than that, everything else in the room will be changed.

Once we have those big items figured out, we get to work sourcing product and create a kids’ room mood board! But first, we have to address the basics in the space.

First…Covering the Popcorn Ceilings

As we mentioned in last week’s post, our first order of business is to cover the popcorn ceiling with product from Armstrong Ceilings. After looking at all of their samples, we decided to go with plain white ceiling planks.

We were tempted to go with beadboard (I mean…how cute for a kids’ room!), but Denise will eventually install this product throughout her entire condo. So we wanted to make sure the ceiling wasn’t too busy throughout the rest of her home. 

This is the one we’re using for the room. We’re so excited to get it installed because we think a fresh white ceiling will really brighten up this small room. We’re planning to share a full DIY tutorial on the installation of this product, so look for that in the coming weeks!

Choosing a Color Palette

With the ceiling chosen, it was time to figure out the color palette for the space. This room is for 3 granddaughters and 1 grandson, so we needed to keep things gender-neutral in here. We decided on a color palette of sage green, navy, and blush. We’ll pair those colors with wood tones and white to build a well-rounded and layered room. 

As for the color on the walls…that was actually a tricky decision! We picked up these 3 samples from Sherwin Williams and were unsure if we would go with a light green, light pink, or light gray for the walls. After getting the samples up, we decided on Sagey.

We’re planning to paint the entire room in a fresh coat of Sagey and we’ll also paint the wood window sill a fresh coat of white. Between the ceiling and the paint, this room will already look completely different!

Choosing Furniture

We know the bunk beds are staying in the room and will even be in that exact same spot. This is the first time either of us has decorated with bunk beds, and it was so fun looking for inspiration. How gorgeous are these white bunk beds with the blue accessories? Love that color palette.

We’re also obsessed with these built-in bunk beds from Chris Loves Julia. Who knew bunk beds could look so high-end? While we won’t be doing anything like this in the room, it is nice to gather inspiration when it comes to the bedding and styling of these kids’ rooms.

On the other side of the room, we’re planning to do a long wall of 3 desks. The kids are really into arts and crafts, so we knew adding a desk area to get creative was a must-have. We purchased this system from Ikea and will have 3 workstations for the kids, not to mention a wall full of shelves for us to style and showcase personal items.

We’re planning to go with this storage unit under the window sill. We’ll add baskets into the little cubbies so the kids each have a spot to drop off their items when they come over to grandma’s house! 

On the wall at the foot of the bunk beds, we’ll add ours favorite book ledges! Gotta take advantage of every nook and cranny in a room like this, so some vertical storage is a must.

Our first real purchase for the space was this sage green rug from Target. We got an 8×10 and think it will really ground the space. Plus, you can’t beat that price tag for such a large rug!
