Reader OMG! – Kerri’s New Build With Organic Modern Design

Reader OMG! is a series showcasing home tours from my favorite peopleโ€ฆThe DIY Playbook readers! Every month or so, I highlight the home of someone with some serious design style. I hope that these swoon-worthy spaces will make you say โ€œOMGโ€โ€ฆhence the name! It also gives me a chance to feature home styles outside of my own, so you can take away some fresh ideas for your space.

Kerri’s New Build With Organic Modern Design

Kerri's Vancouver home tour
  • Homeowner: Kerri, her husband, Steve, and their three teenagers and two dogs
  • Location: North Vancouver, BC Canada โ€“ we are surrounded by mountains and ocean, itโ€™s such a gorgeous area
  • Home Type: 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms
  • Year Built: 2021
  • Describe your Home Style: My style is organic-traditional-modern. I very much take my style cues from the gorgeous nature outside of my door!
  • Favorite Spot in your House: My home office. I converted this bedroom into my home office early last year. I was on a tight budget, but had complete freedom to decorate the space however I wanted!

Kerri may look familiar to you and that’s because she has been featured here on the blog before! I featured her family-friendly home almost three years ago and it was such a popular post. I think that’s because she shared so many easy tips and budget-friendly ideas to customize her home for their family of five.

A Vancouver home with organic modern design

Last fall, Kerri reached out again to tell me about her new home that they purchased in 2021 and customized with their builder. I’ll let her tell the story of their home purchase…

The company who built our home had built almost the exact same house in a different area of our neighborhood and listed it for sale in 2020. We fell in love with the house, but it sold before we could make an offer and we were really disappointed. It felt like ‘the one that got away’. The builderโ€™s realtor remembered us and reached out in early 2021 to let us know that they were building the exact same house, but in a different neighborhood. It turned out to be a few blocks away from our kidsโ€™ high school, and in a much better location for us.

Isn’t it wild how things sometimes work out like that? I love that they were able to hold out for their dream home and truly put their stamp on it when it came to the design. Kerri is an interior decorator (you can see her gorgeous portfolio here) and you can see how very talented she is from her home tour.

Even though I’ve already featured Kerri’s previous home, I was excited to feature her new space because the style is different. It’s more of an organic modern design and you can see a beautiful mix of old and new throughout the space. It’s important to remember that home style is always evolving. If you looked at our previous condo compared to our current home, you might not know that the same couple owned both places! Your home style should evolve and grow, just as you evolve and grow!

Now, get ready for some major eye candy…

The Living Room

Wow, what a gorgeous living room space! First, those built-ins flanking the fireplace are absolutely heavenly. You know I love a good spot to display pretty items and these are styled beautifully. Kerri said that this room gets tons of natural light and when you look out the window you can see the local ski mountain. How cool is that?!

This room sat empty for quite a while until Kerri found the perfect pieces for the space. Just goes to show that home takes time and it’s constantly a work in progress. I love her mix of new items (the couch and rug), along with old items like the beautiful wood chest that was passed down by her grandmother. Oh, and did you see the cute striped coffee table that she scooped up on Facebook marketplace?

The Formal Dining Room

Their formal living room connects to this formal dining room. That gorgeous wood table extends to comfortably sit 12 people. I can just imagine the dinner parties! My favorite additions to the space are the sconces surrounding the map, that she scored at HomeGoods. They’re only $20 a pop and make such a difference! Kerri’s planning to add this fun wallpaper to the space too.

The Kitchen & Dining Areas

This is a black-and-white kitchen that is anything but cold! I adore the raised texture on the subway tile – a modern take on a traditional backsplash. And I can’t get over those awesome large pendants over the island! Kerri says that this is a place where their family of five spends lots of time cooking together, doing homework, and more.

The Family Room

When I was putting this feature together, I stopped in my tracks at this family room. It’s such a great mix of traditional and modern and I adore the limewashed look of the fireplace tile. Then, I went and read Kerri’s comments about the room and laughed out loud. She said she actually isn’t happy with the space, especially the fireplace tile. Ha! Oftentimes, as homeowners, we are our own worst critics. We look at small details and nitpick at them. Let me tell you, guests don’t notice these things! My favorite furniture pieces here are those modern bookcases! They look very Restoration Hardware to me. I didn’t even know Shades of Light carried anything but lighting! Worth a look when shopping for furniture.

The Main Bedroom

Paint Colors: Sherwin Williams “Unusual Gray” (accent wall) and “Spare White (main walls) // End Tables // Dresser // Rug // Artwork

It took Kerri four years to decorate their main bedroom in their previous home and this time around she made it her first priority. I love that! So important to have a comfortable space for some me-time! My favorite piece is the cute wood desk. Kerri said her husband gave it to her many years ago to celebrate their first dating anniversary. At the time, she was living with four roommates and sleeping on a futon, so it was a prized piece of furniture and they have kept it ever since. I love stories like that!

The Office & Guest Room

This is Kerri’s home office, but it also serves as a guest room with a pull-out sofa. The wood accent wall adds a lot of life behind the neutral sofa and Kerri even used my sconce hack to power the lighting! Many of these pieces are from IKEA, proving that you can stay on a budget and still create an elevated look in your home.

A big thank you to Kerri for opening up her home to us for the second time! I absolutely adore her and her design style. If you are looking for some help in your own home, be sure to check out her website. She offers virtual services, so you don’t have to be a Vancouver resident to work with her!

Oh, and another shout-out to the incredibly talented, Tracey Ayton who took these photos. Tracey and Kerri have become friends from their first home tour photo shoot together and it’s so cool for me to see these relationships happen from afar because of The DIY Playbook!
