Why Swag Lights Are the Best Fix for Off-Center Fixtures
Our home office light has always been centered thanks to a simple swag setup, but I recently swapped in a new fixture and was reminded just how good this trick is. If you’re dealing with an off-center electrical box, this is the easiest way to get a centered light without rewiring anything.
My home office refresh is in the fun stage! The molding and floral wallpaper are done, so now I’m layering in lighting and finishing touches.

I swapped out my old chandelier for something bigger and more my style (wait until you see it!), but this room has a vaulted ceiling with an off-center junction box. Luckily, it’s set up as a swag light, which makes centering the fixture super simple.
I’ll show you how this works, what to consider, and share some of my favorite swag light options if you’re tackling something similar.
What Is a Swag Light?

If you’ve never heard the term before, a swag light is basically a light fixture with a longer cord or chain that lets you shift where it hangs. It’s installed at one point on the ceiling, then looped over a hook so the light can be centered exactly where you want it in the room.
What To Look For In a Swag Light

Not all fixtures will work for this setup, so here are a few things I always look for:
Overall scale
Since you’re often centering this over a table or focal point, don’t be afraid to go a little bigger. A more substantial fixture helps it feel intentional. That’s why I wanted to upgrade mine. The old one was fine, but I wanted the new one to have more presence.
Enough cord or chain length
You’ll need extra length to create that “swag,” so you have enough flexibility to reach your new location. I’d look for at least 24 inches of additional cord or chain, but more is usually better, especially with taller or vaulted ceilings. I ended up needing 40 inches for my setup.
Adjustability
Whether it’s a cord or a chain, you want to be able to easily adjust the height. This is what lets you fine-tune where the light hangs and how dramatic, or subtle, the swag looks.
Works with a hook
Make sure the fixture can physically loop over a ceiling hook. Most chain-hung chandeliers work great for this, but it’s something to double check.
How To Center an Off-Center Light Fixture With a Swag Hook
Once you understand how a swag light works, the setup is pretty simple. You’re not actually moving the electrical box. You’re using a ceiling hook to shift where the light hangs.
1. Decide where you want the light centered
First, figure out where the light should actually hang. This might be the center of the room, the center of a desk, or centered over a dining table.
Use a tape measure to find your ideal spot and mark it with painter’s tape. This is what will become the focal point of the room, so take a little extra time here
2. Install a ceiling hook at your new center point

This is the key to the whole setup. The hook is what allows you to “move” the light without actually relocating the electrical box.
You’ll want to choose a ceiling hook that’s rated for the weight of your fixture. Most packages will list a weight limit, so when in doubt, go a little stronger than you think you need.
If you can, install the hook directly into a ceiling joist (similar to a wall stud, but in the ceiling). That’s the most secure option.
If your perfect light location doesn’t line up with a joist, don’t worry. You can use a toggle bolt or heavy-duty drywall anchor that’s rated to support the weight of your light. This ceiling hook can hold up to 200 lbs.
3. Loop the cord or chain over the hook
One of the best parts about this install is that you can rest the light on the hook while you hook up the electrical. Installing a light fixture can be quite the workout, and this gives your arms some reprieve.
Hang the chandelier on its chain and leave some slack so you can “swag” it from the hook to the electrical box. This is what allows the fixture to hang exactly where you want it, even if the junction box is off-center.
4. Adjust the height and placement

Once it’s hooked, step back and take a look. You may need to adjust the chain or cord length slightly to get the height and placement just right.
This is where having an adjustable chain or cord really makes a difference. You want to get this all set and looking the way you want it before you hook up all of the electric.
5. Install the light fixture at the electrical box

The light fixture still gets hardwired at the existing electrical box. If you’re swapping out a fixture as I did, this follows the same basic process as any light fixture replacement. Just know that your wires will likely be pretty long, so keep your wire cutters handy so you can snip extra wiring when needed.
You can check out my full step-by-step tutorial for swapping a light fixture here.
6. Tidy up any extra cord or chain

Tuck or adjust any extra length so everything looks clean and intentional. The goal is for the swag to feel like a design choice—not a workaround.
My Favorite Swag Lights
Now that you know how to center light fixtures using a swag hook, the biggest thing is choosing the right ceiling fixture for your space. If your electrical box is in the wrong place (especially in an old house like mine), this is truly the best way to create a centered, intentional look without cutting a new hole or moving the fixture box.
I rounded up some of my favorite options that work really well for this setup, all with flexible cord or chain lengths so you can easily adjust and mark center wherever you need it.

Before & After

I liked the old light just fine, but seeing it side-by-side with this new one… such a difference.
This new chandelier actually looks like it belongs here. It’s centered, it has more presence, and it works so much better with everything else going on.

This is the same swag setup we’ve always had in this room, which just goes to show how effective it is when your electrical box isn’t in the right spot. It’s a simple change, but it completely transforms the feel of the space.
Next up, I’ve got to finalize the new office furniture for the space. We are getting so close!
