How to Organize Nora Fleming Minis

let's celebrate mini

This is NOT a sponsored post, I just really love this product and feel the need to gush all about it because it’s just that cool. Plus, I recently did a DIY based on it, so I need to give ya a little background on it.

Have you guys heard of Nora Fleming serving platters?! If you haven’t… we seriously need to chat. To be honest, I have no clue if these platters are popular strictly in the Chicagoland area or if they’re popular everywhere. Ms. Nora Fleming, the creator of these gorgeous & genius platters, is from the Chicagoland area so I’m not sure if they are sold here because she’s from here or if they’re sold everywhere. The good news is, if these platters really are just a “Chicago thing”, you are in luck because you can order them online and get them shipped right to you!nora fleming platter

So what are these platters all about?! Well, ALL of the serving platters and plate products are a plain, classic, slightly off-white color. Like this one…

ring mini

The platters and trays come in all shapes and sizes but all have the same look. The part that makes these platters so cool is that they have this tiny little hole, which holds a seasonal “mini” to help accessorize your party.nora fleming minis

There are tons and tons of “minis” to choose from and you can easily trade them out for each of your entertaining needs. Hence, you do not need to buy all new platters for each holiday, but instead, re-use the classic white trays and platters while trading out the mini to match the specific occasion. Pretty gosh darn GENIUS if you ask me!

The minis run about $10-$14 each and as each mini retires from the collection, you can get them on sale. These minis are GENIUS because they eliminate the need for me to have to buy a ton of different themed platters and then find space in my tiny kitchen to store all of this festive  stuff. Instead, I have a few of these classic platters and have a little collection of minis to change out for each party.

This brings me to today’s $5 DIY project. A Nora Fleming Organizer for all m y minis.

One trip to Goodwill later, I found this wall shelf (?) that was intended to hold small figurines back in the day.organizer

I took off the hanging hardware on the back of the box to create a flat bottom.IMG_8595

Then I gave this piece a few coats of white spray paint I had left over from a previous project. After it was dry, I simply added a stickers of the first letter of every month throughout the year, this would help me put my minis in some kind of order by seasonal occasion.nora fleming organizer

Finally, I placed my collection of minis in each of the cubes and I was all set! A $2 shelf turned drawer organizer for some of my favorite entertaining accessories. After buying the $3 stickers, this DIY organizer cost me about $5 to make.

holiday minis drawer organizer organizer Now, all I have to do is place this organizer in my kitchen drawer and I’ll never lose my minis again! For $5, how could I beat this DIY organizer? Definitely an excuse to celebrate in my book.diy organizer

And more importantly, thanks Ms, Fleming… I love your style!Bridget Signature

Date Night Surprise for HIM + FREE Printable

sweetest day

With Casey’s wedding coming up THIS weekend, we are really feeling the LOVE here on the DIY Playbook. Not to mention, there’s something about this cooler weather that makes us want to hug our handsome better halves just a tad tighter. That fact mixed with the idea that here on the DIY Playbook we find pretty much any (and yes, we mean literally ANY) reason to celebrate helped create the idea of today’s post.

Next Saturday, October 18th to be exact, is SWEETEST DAY! After a little bit of research into this Hallmark Holiday, I found out that not every state even celebrates this random excuse to shower your partner with extra love, so we’re not even sure how truly valid Sweetest Day is (had us fooled all these years). But heck, nothing is stopping us from celebrating the fall version of Valentine’s Day with a creative little surprise for our “sweeties”. Plus, we want to share our idea and FREE PRINTABLE with you so you can surprise your sweetie next weekend too! (Us girls have to stick together, right?!)

sweetest dayTo shower Matt with a little extra love, I mixed up a creative date night idea with a twist of his favorite drink ingredients. One thing that Matt is NOT a fan of is picking our plans whenever we are undecided where our evening is headed. Where to eat, what to do, who to go out with… Matt is NOT a fan of deciding the plans, yet he almost always ends up having to decide (oops). So beyond the package & showing him some extra “love” in honor of Sweetest Day, I decided to actually PLAN the date night for a change. I know Matt will appreciate this part of the gift far more than anything else! limeThe gift itself is pretty easy (and cheap!) to assemble. The date night, well…. that’s another story. I’m still thinking about my surprise plans for the Mr. Any ideas?!
IMG_3159I created a “Mustache” theme for this date night by incorporating a mustache glass & a mustache downloadable tag. I grabbed this drinking glass from the Dollar Tree, but if you can’t find one like this, I’m sure your man would appreciate any drinking glass. Alongside the glass, I bought a 7UP bottle, lime and a mini Southern Comfort to mix up one of Matt’s favorite drinks before we head out for the evening. I had to go to a Liquor Store to find the mini SoCo bottle, but I was surprised to find almost any type of alcohol sold in these cute baby bottles. So if your man isn’t a fan of a SoCo + 7, maybe a Coke bottle and Jack Daniels or mini Captain Morgan would do the trick instead. GiftI wrapped the drink ingredients up in clear wrapping paper and tied the top of the package with ribbon.
date nightI downloaded, printed, and cut out this FREE Printable and tied it to the package to finish it off.

What I love about this free tag is that it doesn’t necessarily HAVE to be used for Sweetest Day or even on this package. You could print this bad boy out and hide it by his razor in the morning to notify him about your secret plans for an upcoming Date Night. Talk about catching him off guard and earning MAJOR wife/girlfriend points!!

Free Printable TagNow that the easy part is over, I have to start brainstorming some Date Night ideas. I hope I can come up with something before I present this cute package to my sweetie NEXT Saturday.IMG_3191Date nightDo you celebrate Sweetest Day? If so, any fun traditions? Staple gifts? Creative Ideas for a fun night out?!!

Blogger Stylin’ Home Tour – Highlight Reel

Blogger Stylin Home Tour 3

Last week we shared the details on the Blogger Stylin’ Home Tours Series. We showed you Casey’s light-filled living room, and we had such a great time spilling the beans on why it’s our favorite room. And we got to show you dorky pictures of Casey drinking her morning coffee…
Casey-Drinking-CoffeeToday, we’re back…not with more pics of Casey in her pjs…but with some seriously inspiring spaces. This time around we’re showing off some of the rooms by the crazy talented bloggers who also participated in the series. Guys, you won’t even believe some of this eye candy. So many amazing spaces, and each with its own style and personality.

Now all of the spaces within the series were downright gorgeous, but our post would be a mile long if we showcased all of our favorites. So here are just a couple that really made us go, “Wooooow.” Blogger Stylin Home Tour 3Charming in Charlotte‘s Ah-mazing Nursery: Ummm…can we move right in? This is stunning. That wallpaper. The gold. The pink. The glamour. Our hearts skipped a beat when we spotted this stunner.
Blogger Stylin Home Tour4
The White Buffalo Styling Co.‘s Inspiring Headboard: We knew Lindsay’s room would be amazing, but wow this is such a cool bedroom. So eclectic, funky, and fun! Plus, you have to check out the room tour & read the details on those super awesome DIY-ed bedside lights.Blogger Stylin HomeTour2
Sarah M. Dorsey‘s Succulent Garden: We’ve been a big fan of Sarah’s for a while now, and she did not disappoint with her living room tour. Her style is so bright, clean with pops of gorgeous color! Plus, we couldn’t resist sharing this nautical inspired touch. Using a diving helmet ice bucket as a planter? Genius!
Blogger Stylin' HomeTour 5Dream Green DIY’s Bar Cart: This is bar cart heaven & totally makes me want a cocktail even though it’s 7:00am. Cheers to this fab setup. That garland was a nice touch that we may need to steal for our own bar carts ASAP.

Iron & Twine

Another gorgeous nursery fit for TWO! by Iron & Twine: We love everything Michelle does (in a non-creepy, non-stalker kind of way) & her amazing nursery reveal is no different! She is preparing for TWINS and we could not be more excited for her. The colors, the accent wall, the style… those lil’ ones are in for a real treat when they arrive! Plus, you have to go watch the video Michelle and her husband made as they stocked their nursery with adorable goodies. #gorgeouscouplealert

Blogger Stylin Home Tour6
Desert Domicile’s Amazing Gallery Wall: We recently stumbled upon Caitlin’s fabulous blog and we were so happy to see she is a Chicago native. Woo woo. This gallery wall is everything a gallery wall should be…filled with color, inspiration, and personality. PLUS, this gallery wall even has a hint of hometown pride. Do you see it?!Blogger Stylin HomeTour
Finding Home‘s 3D Gallery Wall: We were lucky enough to meet Laura at the Haven Conference this year and we bonded with this magnificent woman. Her farmhouse chic style is spot on and we absolutely adore this gallery wall filled with one-of-a-kind items. It’s always fun to see how people incorporate more than just frames in a gallery wall, and Laura does that with her own style & flair. Well done lady!!

coffee-table

Bliss at Home’s Stylish yet Comfy Living Room: Kristin’s style is pretty amazing! We love her self-proclaimed motto – “be daring but lovely”… all on a BUDGET! A high-end, glamorous look for less…. where do we sign up?! Seriously though, if you like what you see in this snapshot, you have to go check out her blog! Blogger Stylin' Home Tour3Fieldstone Hill Design‘s Nursery: Last but not least is a unique nursery from Darlene. We were instantly drawn to this space because it isn’t the typical nursery, but instead has a more worldly and tribal feel. Although it’s not the exact style as ours, we are so inspired by the look & are OBSESSED with that geometric mobile. You have to go check out the full details from this space and see her beautiful baby girl.

But really this is just an appetizer of all of the beautiful spaces that were a part of this blogger series. If you’re looking for some seriously satisfying inspiration…check out all of the blogs below. They’re all Hall of Famers in our Playbook.

Allen + Roth Patio Makeover

Patio After 3

(Disclaimer: We have partnered with Lowe’s to bring you this post. However, all opinions expressed are our own because even without the sponsorship, we heart Allen + Roth and that’s why we have their lights in every room of our home)

A few week’s ago, we gushed about one of our latest patio makeovers and shared how making over someone else’s space is not always strictly sunshine & smiles. Tackling someone else’s space means choosing products that reflect someone else’s style, which is where the love-hate relationship of taking on spaces outside our own homes lies. Love that we get to step outside our typical style and play with colors, patterns, and general looks that may not be our “norm”. Hate that we have to step outside our typical style and play with colors, patterns, and general looks because heck… what if they hate our decisions?! #PlaybookProblems

Thankfully, the love-hate relationship of this patio makeover turned out to be filled with SO much LOVE and ALL sunshines & smiles (knock on wood!). I’ll explain the details in a sec, but first… come check out the stunning transformation of this warm & sunny patio.

patio After 4Is it just us or did you just get the sudden urge to crack open a cold one, kick up your feet and relax? Sorry about that, especially on a Monday and all. But seriously, can you believe it’s even the same space?! We still find ourselves scrolling through the before and afters thinking what a huge difference some amazing new furniture and a lot of fabulous color can do. We love how much coziness and flavor the bold pops of warm color and rich furniture has brought this family’s patio. For a family that spends a lot of time socializing and relaxing on their patio, we could not have been more excited to reveal the new digs to these very grateful homeowners.

DIY-coastersPlus, we were super excited that we were able to add some personal, affordable pieces to their patio in order to make it feel even more like “home sweet home”. For example, these DIY Polaroid coasters are the perfect way to protect the table while also highlighting the family’s pride and joy, Griswold the basset hound.

patio OutdoorWe also DIY-ed the “Beer Garden” sign because the family mentioned that they call this space their beloved Beer Garden. We thought a formal sign was a MUST and DIY-ing helped keep the budget in check.

Cherries-in-bowl

A+R TableNow let’s talk about the most stunning part of the new patio, which also happens to be our favorite part of the transformation.  The furniture.

How amazing is this table?! I mean, the pictures don’t even do it justice. The color of the table adds such a rich look to the space and the material of the table is durable, sturdy and so on-trend. Outdoor RugBetween us, the whole set was assembled in under 20 minutes… like ARE YOU SERIOUS?! That’s almost unheard of in the crazy-frustrating world of building boxed furniture. Easy directions, large pieces, minimal screws….. need we say more?

Outdoor TableAnd to chalk one more thing up in the “win” column, let’s chat about how quickly this order was shipped. We ordered this Allen + Roth Table & Chairs on a Wednesday and the customer service department was calling us on Saturday to set up a convenient delivery time for Monday. Saaaayyy whaatttt, door to door service in less than a week? #neverseensuchathing

Allen Roth ChairThe cushions and pillows were also part of the Allen + Roth Patio line at Lowe’s. We heart all of the rustic colors and textures that this line has to offer. If we could coin the whole Allen + Roth “look” in two words it would be: Rich & Rustic… with “quality” sandwiched in between there. Plus, A+R isn’t limited to simply outdoor furniture. Like we mentioned before, Bridget used Allen + Roth for her light fixtures and Casey is eyeing a few A+R must-haves (stay tuned…).

Allen + Roth PillowBeer Garden Pallet

M SignThis “M” marquee was a $14 steal at HomeGoods. Pop of color + personal touch + weather resistant = winner!
outdoor grill apron

Allen-roth-flower-potThe ladder we found in the client’s garage and added it for the patio for some height & color. The bottom lantern was part of the A+R collection and so was the ombre pot. Both oozing with that “rich & rustic” feel.

LanternLadderAnd how about this basset crossing sign?! Of course we had to give another shout-out to the family’s favorite “child”. A DIY-ed pallet seemed like the perfect ticket. I mean, if nothing else, at least they’d love our work because of the basset charm.

Basset crossing DIY#Unimpressed

Basset Hound ArtThe wood I had lying around in my garage (it was actually what I used to cover my air conditioning unit throughout the long, Chicago winter), and the paint was an old sample I had in the garage bringing the grand total of this statement art to a whopping $0.00 + tax.

Patio Ladder

Patio AfterAnd to highlight the textiles from the furniture & cushions, we DIY-ed the rug using Casey’s previous tutorial. What a POP of color this rug brings without breaking the bank!

Dog-crossing-sign

bassethoundOverall, the amazing Allen + Roth furniture, the super-simple assembly, and the crazy fast/easy delivery by Lowe’s made this patio makeover all sunshine and smiles for these two rookies. And despite the unimpressed look on Griswold’s face… we know he loved it too! I mean, how could he not?!

We heart Organizing!

Today is a good day

We’ve been featured! Of course any “feature” has us thinking, “there must be some mistake, you want us?!” and this one is no different in that sense.  And in a whole different sense…. this feature is so different. We’ll explain in a second, but first let’s cover the basics. Bridget’s DIY Laundry Makeover is currently featured in the UHeartOrganizing series over at IHeart Organizing, you should definitely go check it out!
I heart OrganizingAnd while you’re there…. click around, you will not be disappointed at the jaw dropping eye candy that has this magic ability to make you WANT to clean out your junk drawer… like immediately. Hard to believe, we know, but consider yourself warned!
iheartorganizing featureNow let’s chat. Why is this feature so different?

Well, let’s first preface our answer with an honest disclaimer: every feature is just down right amazing & pretty surreal. Each feature seems to remind us once again that with enough dedication and hard work…. the possibilities throughout this unexpected blog journey are far more than we could have ever dreamed of. It sounds cliché, but heck seeing our work published in other places around the internet is just darn-right crazy!! And this one seems just a tad sweeter for a few reasons.

1. We started reading IHeart Organizing far before the DIY Playbook was even on our mind. Before Pinterest, before blogging was our life, and before we even lived in the same city, we tuned in to this blog. When I really think about it, we were big fans of the amazing Jen Jones well before we were even serious about DIY-ing. Essentially, it was reading these amazing blogs (IHeart Organizing included) everyday that inspired us to get our hands a little dirty in the DIY field, which led us to where we are today! So to be featured on a blog that helped inspire us to be where we are today…. WOW! {insert the DIY Rookies doing cartwheels in a field of balloons here}

2. IHeart Organizing still continues to inspire our DIY path. Whether it be a new project or Jen’s amazing photography, DIY Playbook continues to find inspiration from IHeart Organizing & the amazing talent behind it. Hall-of-Fame DIY in our book for sure!

Laundry Room Reveal

3. Last but very not least, this feature is extra sweet because it is completely DIY-ed using Rookie skills, Rookie knowledge and a Rookie budget. It totally reflects what we’re all about here on the DIY Playbook because it’s a project we tackled all by ourselves. From the paint, to the sanding, to the cabinet refacing… we did it (and lived to tell about it) all by ourselves. And if we can do it, we know that YOU CAN TOO!

Today is a good dayAnd just like the canvas on the gallery wall reads, “Today is a good day!”. We are so honored and excited for the feature and still can’t believe the opportunities we have been blessed with along this journey. Thank YOU for all of your continued support, none of this would be possible without YOU tuning in! Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I heart OrganizingNow let’s celebrate, see you over at IHeart Organizing!!

Tips on buying used books… for less.

My built-ins are dripping in books. My bedside has a stack of color coordinated books. Our guest room is sprinkled with books. The bar cart has a few books on it. Heck, there’s even a book on the back of our toilet.

I love decorating with books. It’s something about their color, title, history, and charm that has me constantly looking for new books to add to our collection. So where do we get all these books to scatter around our home?

The bad news: books can be very expensive and if you want to use them all around your home, the cost of books (especially hardcover) can break the bank. The good news: we have some tips for you to get the book look…. for a lot less!
Before we get to the “less” part, let’s clarify the “book look”
 1. Hardcover books are best
 2. The thicker the book, the better
 3. Ditch the book jacket – removing the book jacket will give you a clean, fresh look.
 4. Look at the color of the book’s spine before you buy it (are you looking for a specific color? Are you trying to avoid a specific color? Make sure you look behind the book jacket before you take her home, sometimes the jacket can deceive you into thinking the spine will match. This is not always the case… be careful, especially if you’re looking for the perfect color palette). I was surprised to find these fun patterns when I removed the jacket… Score!
5. Check out the title – Personally, I don’t really care what the title on the spine says for my “look”, but you may. I think the random titles offer diversity and interest in my shelf, but maybe you’re looking for a certain type of book and you want your shelf to reflect that. History, Recipes, Biographies… you be the judge!
Now… the “less” part.
1. Do not pay more than $2 for any one book, unless of course you want to read the book…that’s a different story (pun intended). If you’re picking out books to strictly decorate with, two bucks is being generous…. no more! Most of my books were .50 – $1.
2. Check out local estate sales, garage sales, and even thrift shops for old books. I scored this antique housekeeping book at an estate sale for guess how much? Under two bucks!!
3. Buy in bulk. Sometimes when you buy a whole stack of books at once, you’ll get a deal. Just ask! (Warning: they may look at you like you’re coo-coo crazy, but it’ll be worth it)

4. Stop by your local library and ask if they are selling any of their older books. You’d be surprised… most libraries will say yes! And guess how much they typically charge? Under two bucks! See the trend here? I know you can build your own library without breaking the bank!
Take your time and be patient when building your library. It’s okay to pick up one book here and one book there for months and months and months until you finally feel like you’re making a dent. Don’t rush the process but enjoy it. Half of the fun is the story you create while visiting new libraries, searching for estate sales, and scouring your neighborhood for the next garage sale.

Love this! I’ve just really started collecting books for decorating purposes…a little addicting. I need to be better about checking out garage sales and such. Now I’m even more excited for spring! (Once Christmas is over, of course).

Rustic Beauty

rp_IMG_0139-2.JPG
About a week ago, I jetted out to Estes Park, Colorado for a destination wedding. It was my first ever destination wedding…. and boy did it set the bar high!
The trip was nothing less than amazing. The scenery was breathtaking, the weather was a perfect 10, the itinerary of wedding weekend events was jampacked with once in a lifetime experiences, and the wedding itself was oozing with rustic beauty.

The happy couple and bridal party stood under this charming trellis as the bride and groom exchanged vows.

I loved that the sunflowers wrapped in burlap complimented the yellow accents of the bridesmaid dresses, while adding lots of character and a stunning pop of color.
The ceremony was dripping in natural beauty. I guess that’s what you get when you get married on the side of a mountain? #luckygirl
The guests sat comfortably and enjoyed the love story of the bride & groom, all while soaking in the views.

This was the amazing scenery that surrounded us…

…and this is the stunning aisle that the bride walked up. I mean seriously, how amazing!?

After the personalized ceremony was over, the guests walked down to the resort to kick-off the reception. I promise, the rustic beauty of this reception will not disappoint.

The breath-taking view that surrounded this room was the perfect accent to the natural, rustic theme that was sprinkled throughout the reception.

The centerpieces were made up of colorful displays of flowers that modeled the “wildflower” theme of the mountain.
The centerpieces stood on tree stumps… how appropriate.

The head table was spotted with the same type of flowers. Loving the burlap touches…

The buffet table was one of my favorite parts…

Hints of mason jars, tree stumps, branches, acorns, rocks and jute added a touch of rustic charm.

And here are some other odds & ends that I just couldn’t resist sharing…

A hollowed out birch tree as a vase…amazingness! These trees are everywhere around Estes Park, and I love, love, love how they incorporated them into the floral arrangements.

How unique and charming is this antler chandelier? These lined the room & added to the rustic charm.

One of my all time favorite ideas of the night: a note to each guest! These place cards doubled as personalized notes to each guest. I have never seen anything like this before, and I am obsessed with the idea! What a perfect way to make each and every guest feel welcomed and appreciated. I may have to steal this idea for my own wedding…

The stunning view from the balcony was priceless. Some elk even passed through the property as we enjoyed drinks outside. How perfect could this wedding get?
The passed pre-dinner treats were even adorable. What a great idea to add some color and charm to an otherwise boring bowl of meat.
Overall, the wedding was a grand slam! I loved that hints of the “destination” were sprinkled throughout the entire wedding. What a perfect way to highlight the location and make the most of everyone’s travels.
Cheers to the bride & groom; may your marriage be just as beautiful as your wedding day.

PS. If you want more details on this beautiful vacation hot spot, check out the lodge’s website.
